Sometimes careers are non-linear - and that's cool (and helpful) says space solar researcher Jamie Harrison. “There are so many pathways available to you that are not just linear from high school straight to a career in a specific field. Taking a meandering path can sometimes be an advantage too because it gives you a different perspective. “So don’t be afraid to wander a little bit on your way to whatever goal you have.” Jamie uses her #STEMskills every day in her PhD at UNSW. Boys are not better than girls at mathematics. Boys are not naturally more interested in math than girls. We have spent years - decades - trying to educate, support and uplift women and girls in STEM and yet female participation in math continues to fall. Participation in general continues to fall. And yet AI, climate science, quantum, health, medicine, agriculture... and so much more depends on strong mathematical foundations. We need to be smarter about how we tackle the challenge of encouraging our young people to engage with mathematics. So how do we change the narrative? Policy and education is a start (and starting with early childhood would be great!), but we also need to speak about it differently in our communities and homes. Every day. I challenge everyone to have one conversation (even just one sentence) with someone today that highlights math. With a young person if you can! Find something that you use every day, or is part of your job, that couldn't exist without mathematics and tell someone about it. Maths is not just blackboards and chalk and equations. It's not just robots or engines or buildings. Math is creative, artistic, its storytelling and communication and varied in it's type and application. It is the language that underpins all of science (and more!) and, just like a language, practice and exposure makes you better at it. For everyone. Let's make that our conversation. #Mathematics #ChangeTheConversation #SuperstarsOfSTEM
