Cicada Innovations is thrilled to shine a spotlight on the innovative startups that presented at our inaugural Annual Showcase. Held at the Cicada HealthTech Hub in Westmead, this event celebrated the groundbreaking achievements of our residents and the future of healthcare in Australia. Our resident startups stole the show, presenting their cutting-edge health solutions to a panel of investors and the wider audience. These seven innovative ventures showcased their potential to revolutionise healthcare:  Dr Jeremy K. from iiShield discussed how his innovative tech ‘the KidneyPJ’, is a single-use, thermoprotective device that prolongs transplant procedure time by preventing kidney warming, enhancing surgical conditions, and improving transplant outcomes. Meanwhile, James Reilly, from Latent Knowledge, outlined how their AI-driven research platform connects users with relevant literature, enhancing R&D outcomes through advanced natural language processing and visualisation techniques. Alison Williams, from Outcomes Nutrition Tummily, is making waves with an AI-driven tool for IBS management. Tummily offers personalised nutrition guidance and equips healthcare providers with tailored meal plans and actionable patient insights. Philip Crealy from High Fidelity Orthopaedics is driving Innovative orthopaedic solutions to provide advanced, patient-matched implants and precision instruments to improve outcomes, streamline procedures, and enable efficient, high-quality surgical care. Joanne Cooper,  from World Data Exchange, is creating a platform empowering individuals to control and securely share personal healthcare data, enabling consent-driven, transparent exchanges between users, providers, and organisations worldwide. Bruce Allan, from Triggar Media is creating immersive digital health solutions that leverage VR and AR to create tools for therapy, recovery, and patient engagement, transforming healthcare experiences. And finally, Professor John Iredell and Dr Muhammad Kamruzzaman from Plasmid Therapy are developing affordable probiotic-based oral therapies to restore antibiotic effectiveness, combat antibiotic resistance, and address a looming global health and economic crisis. Maryam has led SDIP to establish a team of world-known serial entrepreneurs and obtain $5.8 M to date, a combination of grants and private investments to advance the JAZBI™ platform. - Anne O'Neill FTSE (Office for Health and NSW Medical Research) Government) has over 25 years of experience in the health, medical research and policy sectors. She is responsible for leading the development and implementation of major policies and programs to enhance medical research capacity in NSW, and raise the profile of NSW research and development nationally and internationally. She is responsible for the NSW Medical Device Fund and NSW Commercialisation Training Program – both have been critical to accelerating the development of NSW intellectual property and the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs in NSW. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Physiology and Pharmacology) (Hons) and an Executive Masters of Public Administration. - Kea Dent, MBA, GAICD, RAC (KD&A Pty Ltd) journey commenced in 1993 when she set up and managed a medical device manufacturing business. That’s a wrap of the NSW Health HCTP: Business Fundamentals Course! Thank you to everyone who joined us throughout the 3 valuable days delving into the business essentials of law, finance, communications, sales, and investment. Here are some of our key learnings: - It’s about getting out there. Social media like Linkedin would be good but it is important to tap into the network and get to know your industry. - Prioritise financial discipline from Day Zero - it sets you up for success and to be prepared to face investors. - Your business is a story: Start with WHY - People buy into WHY you do it, not WHAT you are doing. What is the reasoning that will resonate with your target audience? - Don’t assume public sources are standardised across different countries.  Consider not only the impact of your innovation but also the time horizon aspect and potential changes that might influence your business.
