Have you ever walked past a walled garden or exclusive residence and wondered what’s behind the walls? Think London. Gated patches of glorious green. What if the internet was a walled garden, accessible only to those who could afford the hefty fees? Imagine the stifled innovation, the limited access, and the lost opportunities. That was almost our reality until the open source movement changed the course of technology history. We’re in the same place now with AI, and the next couple of years are going to have a huge impact. A few powerful companies control this transformative technology, incentivised to keep their AI models closed. No surprises. The earning potential is unlimited. But a vibrant open source community is rising to the challenge, advocating for transparency, ethical development, and access for all. Cheryl Mack and I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Laura Chambers, CEO of Mozilla, on the First Cheque Podcast (link in comments). And oh my. We dove deep into the history of the open-source movement and discussed why it matters more than ever in the age of AI. Here are a few key takeaways from our conversation: 1. Open source is why the internet grew so quickly and explosively. That’s a simple lesson: collaboration and transparency can fuel innovation and create trillions in economic value. 2. Mozilla, with its unique non-profit structure, is leading the charge for open AI through its foundation, corporation, venture capital arm, and dedicated AI research. 3. Investing in open AI is a win-win for both ethical considerations and business success. Open AI fosters faster innovation, attracts top talent, and builds a stronger community. The future of AI must be written in open code. Tune in for the full episode: 'From Firefox to AI: Mozilla’s Fight for Open Technology' via the comments. 〰️〰️〰️ First Cheque is dedicated to open-sourcing conversations with experienced investors globally. Our aim? To enhance the craft of early-stage investors, from those writing their first cheques to the veterans in the game.
