📰 The Australian Parliament enacted on Monday a cybersecurity legislative package to bolster national cyber defenses and resilience. The package includes the Cyber Security Act 2024, the Intelligence Services and Other Legislation Amendment (Cyber Security) Act 2024, and the Security of Critical Infrastructure and Other Legislation Amendment (Enhanced Response and Prevention) Act 2024. The Cyber Security Act will execute seven initiatives initially introduced under the Cyber Security Strategy. “The Australian government is delivering on its commitment to secure Australia’s cyber environment and protect our critical infrastructure,” Tony Burke, Minister for Cyber Security, said in a statement. “The government has passed into law Australia’s first standalone Cyber Security Act, a key pillar in our mission to protect Australians from cyber threats. This package forms a cohesive legislative toolbox for Australia to move forward with clarity and confidence in the face of an ever-changing cyber landscape.” The legislation mandates security standards for smart devices; mandatory obligations on certain businesses to report ransomware and cyber extortion payments; a ‘limited use’ obligation that restricts how cyber security information voluntarily provided to the National Cyber Security Coordinator can be used and disclosed; and the establishment of a Cyber Incident Review Board to conduct post-incident reviews into significant cyber security incidents. 🗞️ Read more on this below. #dataprotection #data #dataaustralia #cybernews #forefrontdataandAIcommunity

📰 Australian Red Cross has rolled out a series of AI use cases following the completion of its foundational “digital spine”. The not-for-profit organisation has spent the past 18 months consolidating its infrastructure into six core systems, as well as achieving new data maturity and governance models. Off the back of that, Red Cross CIO Brett Wilson said his team had built a new AI-powered transcription and translation system using Azure Cognitive Services. Wilson said the organisation has to transcribe and translate 600 audio files every day. “Within that conversation, you could have several different languages," he said. “Before, it was something we needed to externally send out and it would come back in batches over two weeks. "As a conservative estimate, we’ve saved about 90 days of waiting time just for those files to come back and 150 hours of administrative time. It’s over half a year of time we have saved.” 🗞 Read more on this below.

📰 Commonwealth Bank is exploring the possibility of replacing thousands of local call centre staff with a ChatGPT-style platform in an expanded use of artificial intelligence for customers being considered by the country’s largest financial institution. The bank is conducting trials of the platform, called Hey CommBank, by testing the technology on employees of the bank who are also customers. The trial is part of a wide range of experiments under way at CBA, which has become the first Australian company to use a so-called AI factory – a cluster of Nvidia chips that support AI processing – supplied by technology giant Amazon. Outlining how the bank is considering using Hey Commbank, CBA chief data and analytics officer Andrew McMullan said in the future he expected customers would become “so familiar with using ChatGPT-style services that it becomes the way that they interact with the bank as well, through our digital channels”. 🗞 Read more on this below. #Data #AI #chatbots #aiprocessing #CBA #ForefrontDataAICommunity

📰 The latest research predicts AI to create 200,000 jobs in Australia by 2030 leading to a productivity uplift and injecting billions of dollars into the economy. The report was handed down by the Tech Council of Australia (TCA), backed by Microsoft, LinkedIn and Workday. Building out the AI workforce is predicted to add billions to the Australian economy, with generative AI alone forecasted to bring in $115 billion with around 70 percent stemming from productivity gains. As emerging technology such as generative AI continues to rise throughout all workplaces, demand for skilled workers in this space will naturally increase. However, the findings showed there's a risk of skills falling short without major reforms. 🗞 Read more on this below. #AI #artificialintelligence #Forefrontdataaicommunity #AIaustralia
