La Trobe Asia provides leadership and informs public debate in Australia about the Asian region.
About us
La Trobe Asia has been established to provide leadership on all aspects of the University's engagement with Asia. It is a unique effort by an Australian university to focus on Asia with a 'whole of University' perspective and to make Asia a key part of our teaching, research and external engagement. The creation of La Trobe Asia reflects our belief in the importance of the ways in which Asia is changing both to Australia and the world and the need for universities to provide leadership in grappling with these momentous changes.

What does "Indigeneity" mean in Asia? For many in these communities, an Indigenous identity can represent a way to strengthen community identities, encourage language and cultural flourishing, highlight their ancestral relationships to land and water, and push back against large states’ attempts to minoritise them. In this La Trobe Asia event we had the pleasure of hearing from Sheryl Lightfoot, Tashi Dekyid Monet, Urmee Chakma, and James Blackwell with host Ruth Gamble You can listen to a recording here: https://lnkd.in/g2964wPP

Australia has a unique view of its place in the world. Surrounded by ocean, a part of the South Pacific but with undeniable links to the legacy of colonialism, our past and how we conduct ourselves with our neighbours are a critical part of our identity. La Trobe Asia director Bec Strating and International Relations lecturer Dr Michael O'Keefe recently spoke at a La Trobe University Library event launching their books to university community. It was hosted by Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nick Bisley. Great paper here by Kate Clayton advancing the case for Quad cooperation on maritime security and climate change. It's a thoughtful and persuasive piece which advocates closer co-ordination amongst Quad members, and it is well worth a read.
New Policy Brief from me for United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. Operationalising the Quad: Maritime security and climate change in the Indo-Pacific. This paper advances the case for enhanced Quad cooperation on maritime security and climate change. Increasing its attention on maritime security and climate change issues will help operationalise the Quad’s agenda, streamlining Quad programs to focus on achievable and inclusive initiatives that strengthen Indo-Pacific security. To combat criticisms of the Quad as a ‘talk shop,’ the partnership should focus on providing a platform for regional institutions to convene and coordinate and deliver public goods consistent with the region’s needs. This paper builds off my learnings working on the Quad over the past few years, and in particular my U.S. Department of State U.S. Embassy in Australia International Visitor Leadership Program on Enhancing Regional Maritime Governance and Cooperation in the Quad, where I spent a month in the U.S. with maritime experts. Thanks so much to the wonderful Alice Nason, Sophie Mayo and Ava Kalinauskas for your feedback and work pulling this together.
