Transdisciplinary research to reconnect people with ecosystems and place-based knowledge for universal well-being.
About us
We conduct transdisciplinary research to reconnect people with ecosystems and place-based knowledge for universal well-being. In our research projects we seek to: - Co-design research and action, with and influenced by, Indigenous knowledge holders; - Transform human-environment relations through place-based, just, and collaborative processes; - Recognise living systems where there are interdependencies and mutualities; strengthen governance and management for sustainability and eco-social justice. Our logo was created by Rhys Paddick, a Yamatji, Budimia, Noongar Australian: “The colours green and blue within the hands represent lands and waters, connected through the hands which can be representative of Indigenous knowledge, complex ecological systems, communities relevant to place and pushing boundaries”.

Preparing for an Insightful Presentation on Place-Based Learning 🌏 Dr Leanda Mason and Dr Karen Nociti are practising for their upcoming presentation with Centre Director, Professor Mindy Blaise, "Unsettling place-based learning through thinking with Everywhen" at the The Australian Association for Research in Education. They share three related Everywhen practices, including intergenerational knowledge-making, naming, and relational positioning, and show how these open up different ways of relating to time and place. This is vital for re-establishing human-environment ways of being in ongoing and persistent colonial contexts. #AARE2024 #PlaceBasedLearning #Everywhen #IntergenerationalKnowledge #RelationalPositioning #HumanEnvironment #EducationResearch

🌏 Our Second Objective 🌏 At the Centre for People, Place and Planet, we are driven by four core objectives that guide our research. These objectives help us work towards transdisciplinary approaches, reconnecting people and place. One of these objectives is “To transform human-environment relations through place-based, just and collaborative processes.” This objective is central to our mission and guides all our research and initiatives. The design and implementation of projects exemplify this commitment. We work with community members, Elders and traditional knowledge holders in the places where our research is located so the work is participatory and informed by community perspectives and experience. We pay attention to features of local ecosystems and draw upon Western and Indigenous knowledges to advance understanding of human-environment interactions. Our research is guided by principles of climate justice, aiming to address and rectify environmental inequalities. By partnering with communities, institutions, and places, we co-create new ways of knowing and being. This collaborative approach ensures that our research is grounded in real-world contexts and has a meaningful impact. Some examples of our work that illustrate this include the climate justice and community services sector project, the Protecting Peatlands and Ecosystems in Southwestern Australia (PEAT) project and the Intergenerational Cultural Transfer of Indigenous Knowledge project. #Sustainability #ClimateJustice #IndigenousKnowledge #Collaboration #TransformativeChange
