Please join the Sydney Policy Lab in welcoming our first cohort of seven multidisciplinary nodes! Breakthroughs on complex policy challenges don't happen without space to share existing work, collaborate and nurture future full-scale projects. That's why the researchers convening each successful node will receive Lab support and seed funding to tackle complex issues at the top of the policy agenda. These leaders represent a cross-section of the expertise at the University of Sydney. The Lab is looking forward to working with them to maximise the potential for impact in their research and collaborations. Without further ado, meet the first Sydney Policy Lab nodes and their convenors: ⚡ Adaptive policy systems – Professor Anne Marie Thow, Professor Stephen Simpson and Dr Kate Harrison Brennan ⚡ Harnessing arts and cultural practices to transform health and care – Professor Michael Anderson, Associate Professor Claire Hooker and Professor Brendan McCormack ⚡ Innovation and commercialisation – Dr Jarryd Daymond, Brenda Hartley and Dr Maria Rumyantseva ⚡ International education – Professor JULIA HORNE and Professor Gaby Ramia ⚡ Justice collaboration – Associate Professor Emma Barrett and Associate Professor Garner Clancey ⚡ Social policy and the root causes of health inequality – Associate Professor Seye Abimbola, Dr Edward Jegasothy and Professor Martijn Konings ⚡ Wellbeing of teachers and leaders in schools – Dr Lucy Corbett, Dr Lisa Kim and Associate Professor Louisa Peralta Researchers, policymakers and community members are encouraged to get involved by connecting with node convenors.

FILM RELEASE: ‘The Australian Ad Observatory: A web of invisible influence’ 🎥 https://lnkd.in/gKCxYdhd The Australian Ad Observatory project is creating new methods to document emerging forms of automated #advertising, and enabling industry, civil society and government to respond to the challenges it poses for #observability and accountability. Our new short #film, produced by ADM+S staff in collaboration with project researchers and industry partners, explores the key questions, challenges, outcomes and future directions in one of our major research projects. “The role that we play is not in a sense just finding the evidence one time, but in engaging continuously in this conversation so that when Australians from different groups and sectors get together to talk about the power of digital platforms, we’re doing it from a much more informed point of view,” explains ADM+S Associate Investigator Nicholas Carah. The inaugural Australian AI Safety Forum 2024, hosted at and supported by the University of Sydney last week, marked a significant step in Australia’s growing involvement in the global dialogue around #AI safety and governance. ADM+S Chief Investigator and one of the event organisers Prof Kimberlee Weatherall said, “introductory talks on the state of AI, AI safety and AI governance sought to create a common ground among researchers coming from very different disciplines and – if the enthusiasm and energy of the conversations in and outside the formal sessions is anything to go by – activated strong interest in understanding different perspectives on AI safety and governance questions.” The forum provided a platform for rigorous discussions on technical aspects of AI safety, including the science of AI alignment, safety engineering, and risk assessment. Participants also actively explored the governance challenges around regulating advanced AI technologies and how Australia specifically can contribute to the development of international AI safety frameworks. Three recent Sydney Law School graduates have jointly won this year’s Academy of Law Essay competition worth $10 000. The question asked entrants to assess the reasons in the recent High Court of Australia decision which overturned a long-held legal precedent in indefinite immigration detention. Zachary Gomes, Charlie Ward and Aryan Mohseni were commended by the judging panel for taking on a very complex and challenging Constitutional issue and demonstrating a high standard of intellectual rigour and scholarship. #LeadershipForGood

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott today at the Domestic and Family Violence Conference reaffirmed the University’s commitment to a whole-of-institution approach in supporting students and staff affected by domestic and family violence. This includes backing the findings and recommendations of the 2018 Red Zone Report into sexual violence and hazing in Australian university residential colleges undertaken by End Rape on Campus Australia, and condemning any behaviour that ignores the impact of trauma resulting from sexual misconduct. We are doing all we can to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community and have initiated an inquiry into the behaviour of some of our current students at a student council meeting last week.
