Research Tuesdays: Redefining human genetics Imagine a world where advanced gene editing was commonplace: would there be designer babies or fewer genetic diseases? This may sound like science fiction, but researchers are rapidly advancing toward these possibilities. Professor Paul Thomas, School of Biomedicine, uses CRISPR technology to develop precision therapies for various inherited diseases and genetic tools for suppressing invasive pests—and he’s speaking out about the possible risks of gene editing. Award winning director of the Adelaide Centre for Epigenetics Professor Jose Polo has been recognised by his peers and elected into the Australian Academy of Science Fellowship. Professor Polo’s work in epigenetics, reprogramming and cancer has been published in journals such as Nature, Cell, Nature Genetics, Cell Stem Cell and Nature Medicine among others as well as recognised with several awards. TRAUMA WEEK The inaugural Trauma Week was held recently for third year Bachelor of Medical Studies students. Hosted at Adelaide Health Simulation, in partnership with Central Adelaide, the University of Adelaide and MedSTAR, it was a week of incredible experiences for our learners, showcasing gold standard trauma management and care. The program demonstrated fundamental concepts, including Trauma resuscitation, working cohesively in inter-professional, multidisciplinary, multi-specialty teams and the impact of streamlined systems, prioritisation and communication. The opportunity to learn key concepts in prevention and management from the moment of trauma to the multidisciplinary rehabilitation stages and societal impacts integrated across all domains was highly valuable to students. Highlights included visits to the Centre for Automotive Safety Research, MedSTAR and Level 1 Trauma simulation sessions followed by full clinical debriefs and microskills teaching. Trauma week was conceptualised by Associate Professor Joe Dawson together with Professor Chien-Li Holmes-Liew, Associate Professor Elizabeth Beckett, Dr Andrea Dillon, Associate Professor Adam Montagu and teams.

Congratulations to Dr Daniel Carragher, School of Psychology, who has been awarded $478,861 by the Australian Research Council to investigate whether humans can use facial recognition technology effectively to assist in face identification tasks, leading to the development of world-first methods to improve current accuracy. A collaboration between the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) and the Adelaide Nursing School established a program of voluntary placements for students in the Graduate Diploma of Nursing Science programs who currently work as registered nurses in an emergency department or intensive care setting. The placements provide students with a weeklong experience where they work with flight nurses to transport patients all over South Australia while learning about the complexities of managing patient care in a confined space while in the air.    By the end of 2024, 20 students will have experienced a placement and all report that the experience is both exciting and contributes to their learning.

Congratulations to Professor Helen Siobhan Marshall AM who has received $3 million to lead a new research centre set to determine the most effective immunisation program using one vaccine to protect against both meningococcal disease and gonorrhoea. Funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Centre for Research Excellence (CRE) in Neisseria disease control will significantly drive down cases of meningococcal disease and gonorrhoea in Australia and globally.
