Experience a slice of paradise in Boracay, Philippines
After nearly three years without an overseas holiday, it was finally time to take the plunge and book a relaxing getaway. My only pre-requisite was a destination where my days could be filled with lazy, sun-soaked moments and endless hours in the sea.
My mind raced as I went through all the places that would fit the bill. Bali? Thailand? Malaysia? Vietnam? When I couldn’t decide, a colleague recommended the Philippines. The Philippines? How hadn’t I thought of that? And without a second thought, my holiday to Boracay was booked!
Boracay is an island in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is approximately seven kilometers long, with the narrowest spot being less than one kilometer wide, and has a total land area of 10.32 square kilometers. It’s famed for its pristine waters, white sand beaches and laid back vibes.
And what’s even better, arriving in paradise is simpler than you could imagine.

After flying from Manila to Godofredo P. Ramos, also known as Caticlan Airport, you take a short ferry ride to Boracay island. From there, most hotels are within a 15-to-30-minute ride away. It took me less than 2 hours from arriving at Caticlan Airport to sipping a cocktail beachside.
White Beach is the main attraction in Boracay and one of Southeast Asia’s most popular spots. It’s divided into three main areas: Station 1, Station 2 and Station 3. While there is no separation between these areas, the areas can also be referred to as North, Middle and South, respectively. You can walk along the sandy beach or on a paved path running parallel to it. Be warned if you choose the path as there are vendors on either side who will make it hard to resist a bargain.
Station 1 is the most relaxing and laid-back part of White Beach, also the home of Willy’s Rock. You’ll have your choice of 5-star properties with beachfront access, up-market restaurants and best of all, hardly any crowds. It’s popular for couples and those looking for a getaway from the every day. Spend your day stand up paddle boarding, swimming or just soaking up the sunshine. Cool down with the ever-popular mango fruit shakes at Jonah’s Fruitshake and Snack Bar.
Station 2 is the tourist hub of the island with most mid-budget accommodation options. It’s also home to D’mall, the largest open air shopping area in Boracay. It has endless restaurants, fresh produce stalls, souvenir shops as well as clothing and accessory stores. This area has a high concentration of live music venues as well, so you’re spoilt for choice if you want to see a band over drinks. Moi Raku is a popular spot you won’t want to miss.

Finally, Station 3 is the area furthest South on Boracay Island. There are more choices here for affordable accommodation including hostels. It’s relatively quieter here, so a great spot to unwind after a day exploring. This area is home to arguably the best restaurant in Boracay, Nonie’s. Located at Station X near Hue Hotel, it’s a gem for those looking for fresh, healthy and utterly delicious food. Everything on the menu is made from scratch with locally sourced ingredients, and offers plenty of choice for vegans/vegetarians and those with intolerances. The menu offers a mix of staples like salads and grain bowls with a Filipino twist as well traditional meals including their famous 72-hour crispy pork belly, soft boiled egg, Cavite style adobo sauce, candied garlic, with organic black rice.
So whether you want a relaxing resort holiday, a family beach break or a getaway from the everyday, a visit to Boracay should be on your list.
