Madeira Magic: Known as The Hawaii of Europe

#voyagevibes Madeira is one of those destinations that takes your breath away—literally and figuratively. This lush Portuguese island, often overlooked, is a hidden gem packed with jaw-dropping views, unique experiences, and a vibe that’s both adventurous and serene. We started our trip with an early-morning trek up one of Madeira’s iconic peaks to watch the sunrise. Arriving at 4am, wrapped in layers against the chill, we stood in awe as the sun slowly broke over the horizon, it’s a must do. Any taxi will take you and we just negotiated the rate, they will wait for you when you are ready to descend. At that altitude, the air is thin, and every breath feels like an effort—but the experience was nothing short of magical. It’s the kind of moment that stays with you. Madeira’s famous basket rides are the kind of quirky activity you won’t find anywhere else. After taking a scenic cable car ride up the hill, we hopped into a wicker basket on wheels (yes, really). Get ready as two strapping men pull you down the hills. Prepare for plenty of laughter and a few screams! One day we hired a local taxi driver and after negotiating a fixed day rate he took us to see Madeira’s famous black sand beach, several waterfalls and the islands natural pools. For the brave (or slightly crazy) there’s cliff diving in to the Atlantic Ocean. I gave it a go and although my technique left much to be desired, the trill was incredible.
