Folk songs from Northern Shaanxi originated and flourished in the Loess Plateau of Northern Shaanxi

Three thousand years ago, the Book of Songs had a verse: 'The heart is worried, I sing and chant.' Three thousand years later, the 'Xintianyou' singers in Northern Shaanxi said: 'Xintianyou, never stop, if it stops, the poor can't relieve their worries.' The word 'worry' witnesses why Chinese folk songs have been passed down from generation to generation. The collection of folk songs from Northern Shaanxi is very rich. Since they were discovered by musicians from 'Lu Yi' in Yan'an from all over the country in 1938, the recording and sorting activities have never stopped for eighty years. The number of folk songs recorded at different times ranges from dozens to hundreds, from hundreds to thousands, and even more than ten thousand. They are good at expressing various feelings in production labor, festival temple fairs, suffering, anger, love, and marriage through folk songs, and they sing freely and finally are known as an encyclopedia revealing the society, history, culture, folk beliefs, and human affairs of the Loess Plateau in Northern Shaanxi. 'The world has great beauty but does not speak'! The 'great beauty' of folk songs from Northern Shaanxi is in the poetic lyrics, in the heart-touching tunes. It is bold and simple, rich and deep. In the great changes of the 20th century, folk songs from Northern Shaanxi have experienced different periods of traditional folk songs, revolutionary historical folk songs, and new traditional folk songs. Each period has left its own classic songs, and each classic is a deeply touching historical narrative. The Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum officially opened to the public in 2018. The museum integrates the collection, display, performance, research, and dissemination of folk songs from Northern Shaanxi. It covers a wide area and has rich exhibition areas.
