2024 Kota Kinabalu Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Kota Kinabalu is the capital city of Malaysia's Sabah, or Borneo. In downtown Kota Kinabalu, there are cultural sites such as the astounding Masjid Bandaraya (Kota Kinabalu City Mosque) and the Atkinson Clock Tower as well as gastronomical ones like Welcome Seafood Restaurant and Suang Tain Seafood Restaurant. Leaving the city proper, Kota Kinabalu has islands such as Pulau Mengalum and Sapi Island, which are suitable for snorkeling. There are also mountains to go climbing, such as Malaysia's famous Gunung Kinabalu, or Mount Kinabalu.

My bestie’s husband took care of all the details for this trip. The four of us traveled together. 👍 Highly recommended: Pink University of Sabah, Floating Mosque, Mantanani Island.
Entry preparation: Passport, ID card
👉 Print out your round-trip flight itinerary ✈️ and hotel booking confirmation 🏨
You can prepare some local currency 💰, but Alipay is accepted in many places.
🚗 Transportation: Grab is very convenient!
💖 Recommended attractions:
You must go to the mangrove forest to see the fireflies. The fireflies there are as bright as stars, and you will feel like you are in a fairy tale.
Top recommendation: Pink University of Sabah. It is very photogenic, and you can take great photos 📷. There is also an aquarium and a beach, which are worth visiting. But remember to take a taxi, as the University of Sabah is really big! The Floating Mosque is also very beautiful.
Snorkeling on Mantanani Island and Mabul Island is amazing. The water is clear, and you can see many marine creatures. The only downside is that the boat ride takes 1–1.5 hours, so prepare some motion sickness medicine. It is really hot there.
Travel tips:
Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and sun hat. The UV rays are very strong there.
Comfortable clothes: Shorts, short sleeves, and light dresses. Bring a jacket, as the temperature difference between day and night is large.
Snorkeling equipment: Mask, snorkel, etc. You can also rent them locally. I am nearsighted, so I bring a prescription mask.
Photography equipment: Camera or phone
Others: British plug adapter, mosquito repellent, motion sickness medicine, cold medicine. Bring them if you have them.
Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu: A Dreamy Stay
Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu: A Dreamy Stay
In Kota Kinabalu, there is a place like a paradise on earth - Shangri-La Tanjung Aru.
Once you step into the hotel, the lush greenery will catch your eye. The hotel corridor is like a path through a tropical rainforest, and the exquisite plant decorations make you feel like you are in a mysterious tropical jungle. But be careful of the occasional gecko. Here, whether in the corridor or the lobby, you can enjoy a unique view as long as you sit down, as if time has stopped for this beautiful scenery.
The hotel's private beach is a highlight, as it is one of the "world's three most beautiful sunset spots." When the sun sets and the afterglow shines on the sea, the view is breathtaking.
As for the rooms, although it is an old hotel and the facilities are a bit outdated, the cleanliness is impeccable. Each room has an outdoor balcony. The sea view room allows you to enjoy the beautiful sunset without leaving the room. The orange-red sunset reflected on the sea is like a natural oil painting. The mountain view room offers a wonderful view of the sea and mountains. Different rooms have different views, each with its own merits. Each room is also equipped with a capsule coffee machine, which is a thoughtful benefit for coffee lovers.
The service is also commendable. From the moment you arrive at the hotel, the staff enthusiastically helps with your luggage and takes it directly to your room. The breakfast is rich and varied, catering to the tastes of travelers from all over the world. You can see many Korean tourists here. The hotel also has its own pier and boats, making island hopping and fishing very convenient. We went fishing, and it cost CNY 1,744 for four people to charter a boat for three hours. The unit price is higher for the first two hours, and it is cheaper to add an hour. The boat is spacious and can accommodate 6-8 people. If you want to save money, sharing a boat is a good choice. Although we only caught one small fish, we followed local regulations and released fish smaller than a forearm. This experience was also very interesting. In short, there are surprises everywhere, and it was an unforgettable stay.

"Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu: A Luxurious Seaside Retreat"
Stepping into Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu feels like embarking on a dreamlike journey.
The hotel's exterior design is unique, blending modern and local elements. From a distance, it looks like a magnificent seaside palace. The lobby is spacious and bright, with high ceilings and luxurious chandeliers creating a luxurious atmosphere. The floor is as smooth as a mirror, reflecting everything around it, making every step feel like walking on a work of art.
The sea view room I stayed in was a feast for the eyes and soul. The floor-to-ceiling windows are like a giant viewing platform, offering an unobstructed view of the market, pier, and the enchanting sea. In the morning, the first rays of sunlight shine on the sea, waking up the sleeping city. The sound of ship horns at the pier and the hustle and bustle of the market intertwine, creating a unique morning symphony. Here, the sunset is a spectacular show. As the sun slowly sets, the sky is painted orange-red, and the brilliant colors reflect on the shimmering sea. The whole world is bathed in this light, and every time you watch it, you are mesmerized.
The hotel's facilities are top-notch. The bedding is soft and comfortable, like lying on a cloud, ensuring a good night's sleep. The bathroom features high-end toiletries and a spacious shower area, making every wash a pleasure. The room's decor is exquisite and elegant, with attention to detail that reflects quality. Whether it's the artwork on the walls or the delicate ornaments, the hotel's pursuit of beauty is evident.
The surrounding environment also adds to the experience. Durian Street, the Central Market, and Gaya Street are just a stone's throw away. Strolling through them in your free time allows you to experience the rich local culture. It's convenient to go to Tanjung Aru Beach to watch the sunset, and the many bars by the sea are great places to spend the evening. When traveling with a tour group, the driver can always pick you up quickly, and transportation to the airport is convenient and affordable. At Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu, every moment is filled with surprise and joy. It is a luxurious home by the sea.

There is a locker in the shower room, so you can store small bags.
To use the shower facilities, take the Star Lounge ticket and go to the gym to ask for a key.
You can receive it after filling out a simple usage form.
The inside of the Star Lounge is really wide,
and the sofas are very comfortable, so it's good to use with children.
There are also plenty of seats, so there's no waiting.
They also sell ramen, snacks, etc. inside,
but the prices aren't cheap.
Sunset Poem - A Tribute to the Dusk at Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu
In the evening, walking along Tanjung Aru Beach in Kota Kinabalu, the air is filled with the gentle scent of sea salt, and the sea breeze lightly brushes by. The sky gradually turns a warm shade of orange. As the sun slowly sets in the west, the entire sea surface sparkles like it's been set ablaze with golden light. The waves gently lap against the shore, making a whispering sound, as if singing a hymn to this beautiful sunset.
The scene before your eyes takes your breath away. The orange-red sky gradually transitions to pink and purple, finally sinking into a deep blue. At this moment, where the sky meets the sea, the sun looks like a burning ruby, slowly sinking into the horizon, leaving a trace of afterglow gently illuminating the clouds. The surrounding visitors also stand quietly, seemingly unwilling to break this tranquility, their gazes filled with a touch of emotion, silently cherishing this rare scenery.
Watching the sunset on Tanjung Aru Beach, time seems to stand still. This splendid scene where the sea and sky intertwine is not only a visual feast but also a gentle moment that soothes the soul. This sunset poem will become the most tender chapter in your memory.
It's not that Sanya is unaffordable, but that Kota Kinabalu is more cost-effective!

🌅✨Chasing the stunning sunset in Kota Kinabalu, time seemed to stand still. 💖
👋Hi, dear friends! Today I want to share with you a visual feast - the stunning sunset I chased in Kota Kinabalu, it was so romantic! 💃
🌄I remember that evening, I climbed up the small hill by the sea in Tanjung Aru with great expectations, I was so excited, just like the first time I went to the amusement park when I was a child! 🎢 When I stood on the top of the hill, the scene in front of me took my breath away - the setting sun was like blood, the sea was sparkling, and the whole world was dyed with a gentle golden color. At that moment, I seemed to be integrated into this painting, and all my troubles were gone with the wind. 🍃
😢Speaking of pain, it may be that during the process of chasing the sunset, I was occasionally "kissed" by mosquitoes! Haha, but compared to the beautiful scenery in front of me, this little sacrifice is nothing! 😉
💖Emotionally, I was really deeply moved by this tranquility and beauty. Watching the setting sun slowly sinking into the sea level, my heart calmed down. At that moment, I felt an unprecedented relaxation and satisfaction, as if the whole world was cheering for me! 💪
🌈What is full of positive energy is that this experience makes me believe more that the beauty in life is always worth our pursuit and waiting. Just like this sunset, although it is short, the memory it left me is eternal. 💖
📸Finally, don't forget to use the camera to record this beautiful moment! Believe me, when you look at these photos, the touch and warmth will come to your heart again. 💕

Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel - A room with a view.
Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel - A room with a view. We stayed in Kota Kinabalu for 4 days and split our stay between two hotels. We stayed at the Marriott for the first two days and the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru for the last two days. Here are some photos of the Marriott.
The Marriott has a consistent style and service. Photos 1-4 are of the sea view suite my parents stayed in. The room overlooks the hotel's infinity pool and the sea view is great.
Photos 5-7 are of the afternoon tea at the executive lounge that came with our room. The executive lounge is open all day and breakfast is also available, but it's not as good as the buffet breakfast. We chose to have breakfast at the buffet restaurant. The food was great and there was even a teh tarik performance.
Afternoon tea is available at the executive lounge from 4-6pm. The food was great. There was cheese, fruit, sandwiches, and a delicious cream of mushroom soup. Alcoholic drinks are available from 4-7pm. There's beer, red wine, white wine, coffee, and soft drinks. Alcoholic drinks are not available after 7pm.
The infinity pool is open from 6am to 8pm. If you go at the right time, you can take some beautiful photos of the sunset.
Photos 8-9 are of my smaller room with a balcony. The room has a balcony and windows on three sides. The room was perfect except for the fact that it was on a lower floor and I could see the roof and it was far from the elevator. I booked the room because of the bathtub, but I didn't have the courage to take a bath with the curtains open (there were fishing boats on the sea).
Tanjung Aru - the best sunset spot in the world!
Tanjung Aru, a jewel in Kota Kinabalu's crown, is where magic happens every evening. This beach, just a stone's throw from the city center, has become famous for its jaw-dropping sunsets that'll make you believe in love at first sight – or at least, love at first sunset.
Picture this: You're strolling along the sandy shore, feeling the warm breeze on your skin. As the day winds down, the sky starts its nightly show. It's like Mother Nature decided to splash her most vibrant palette across the horizon. We're talking golds, oranges, pinks, and purples that'd make even the most filter-happy Instagrammer put down their phone in awe.
What makes Tanjung Aru's sunsets so special? It's all about location, baby. The beach faces west, giving you front-row seats to the sun's grand finale. And the best part? The open sea stretches as far as the eye can see, with no pesky islands blocking your view. It's just you, the sky, and maybe a few puffy clouds for added drama.
But wait, there's more! The beach is lined with twisted, gnarly aru trees (hence the name Tanjung Aru). These character-filled trees make for the perfect silhouettes against the colorful sky. Talk about a photo op!
As the sun dips lower, locals and tourists alike gather to witness the spectacle. Some folks jog along the beach, others set up picnics, and you'll always spot a few lovebirds holding hands (cue the "awws"). The vibe is pure chill – it's like everyone's collectively decided to press pause and just soak in the beauty.
And when that sun finally kisses the horizon? Pure magic. The sky lights up in a final blaze of glory, reflecting off the calm waters and turning the whole world golden for a few precious moments.
So if you're in Kota Kinabalu, do yourself a favor and catch a Tanjung Aru sunset. Trust me, it's the kind of experience that'll stick with you long after your tan fades. Just remember to put down your camera for a minute and take it all in – some moments are best captured by the heart, not the lens. #SunsetGoals

A Journey Through Time: My Adventure at Mari Mari Cultural Village, Malaysia
My visit to Mari Mari Cultural Village was an unforgettable journey into Borneo's rich heritage. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by a tribal guide who shared captivating stories about the five indigenous groups. I participated in traditional activities like blowpipe shooting and rice-wine tasting, immersing myself in their vibrant culture. The live performances, especially the bamboo dance, were mesmerizing. Sampling local delicacies while surrounded by stunning nature made the experience even more special. #malaysia #malaysiatrip #kotakinabalu #marimaricultural #100waysoftravel

Tanjung Aru Beach: Sabah's Secret Sunset Paradise
#myhiddengems
Tanjung Aru Beach in Kota Kinabalu is a hidden gem, perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape. With soft golden sands and stunning sunsets, it's an ideal spot for relaxation. The beach’s local charm shines through with small food stalls offering fresh coconuts and street food. Unspoiled by commercialization, Tanjung Aru offers an authentic coastal vibe, making it a must-visit in Sabah.
Delicious Food at Jalan Gaya.
Our first dinner in Sabah was at Gaya Street, featuring skewers, gado gado, charcoal-grilled chicken wings, sandwiches, durian pancakes, and more.
Skewers are around RM1-2 each, chicken wings are RM5 for two, and gado gado is priced by weight. You can pick your favorite fruits, and the vendor will add the sauce. Since it's a street food experience, we sat on the ground just like the locals.
It's very lively, with lots of choices and affordable prices. 👍🏻

Trip to Kota Kinabalu 🇲🇾
It was a short trip to Kota Kinabalu 🇲🇾
On our first day, we visited Gaya Street Sunday Market. We explored the bustling market filled with local crafts, food, and souvenirs. Gaya Street, historically known as Bond Street, dates back to the early 1900s when it was the main commercial hub of Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu). The market is a vibrant reflection of the city’s multicultural heritage, where you can find everything from local handicrafts to traditional snacks.
⏰6:30 AM - 1:00 PM (Sundays)
📍Jalan Gaya, Kota Kinabalu.
We also visited the Sabah State Museum. The museum was established in 1965, houses an extensive collection of artifacts that tell the story of Sabah’s diverse ethnic groups, its colonial past, and its natural history. The museum complex also includes a Heritage Village, where traditional houses of various indigenous groups are on display.

⏰ 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
📍 Jalan Muzium, Kota Kinabalu.
We also explored the Atkinson Clock Tower. It is one of the oldest standing structures in Kota Kinabalu. It was built in 1905, the Atkinson Clock Tower is a memorial to Francis George Atkinson, the first District Officer of Jesselton, who died of malaria at a young age. The clock tower survived the Allied bombing during World War II and remains one of the few pre-war structures still standing in the city.
📍 Signal Hill Road, Kota Kinabalu.
We also explored the Signal Hill Observatory Platform to enjoy panoramic views of Kota Kinabalu and the surrounding islands. Signal Hill is the highest point in Kota Kinabalu, offering sweeping views of the city skyline, the coastline, and the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. Historically, it served as a strategic lookout point during the British colonial era.
