Kamikochi 2024
Visited Kamikochi on October 27, 2024, by booking a direct bus ticket from Matsumoto at 5:30 AM, arriving at Kamikochi around 7:05 AM. The weather was great, beautiful, and impressive. Initially, the weather forecast predicted rain because it had been raining the days before, so I was prepared for that. However, on the actual day, it didn't rain, the sky was clear, and the sun was shining. It was really beautiful. Around 10:00 AM, it started to get crowded. An important note is that you have to take your trash with you as it's hard to find a place to dispose of it, and there is a 100 yen fee to use the restroom.
Snowy hot spring hotel in the forest! I was shocked.
To summarize, the advantages of the homestay (Matsumoto Hanare: 5-3-20 Ote, Matsumoto, Nagano 390-0874, Japan) are as follows:
[One] Everything is available, suitable for staying for a few more days, and as convenient as living at home, everything you need is available.
[Two] The price is right, and the cost performance is super high;
[Three] The landlord is very enthusiastic and considerate, and there is no barrier to communication.
[Four] All places are very clean and comfortable, you can walk barefoot anywhere in the house as soon as you enter the door;
[Five] There are coin-operated washing machines and dryers.
[Six] The location is good, and it is convenient to buy, eat, and play.
There should be no more perfect homestay than this one. Everything in the photos can be used, such as ovens, microwave ovens, coffee machines, pots and pans, and even rice cookers; and they are all very delicate. The landlord (about 70 years old) is very enthusiastic and considerate, and he is very up-to-date. He has a very useful translator, and there is no barrier to communication with us. He is very careful to introduce the homestay for fear that we don't know, hahaha.
The price is not expensive, only 330 per night. This detached house has a total of 3 rooms, two upstairs and one downstairs. Our room is the smallest and the worst (we already think it is very good), and the other two have balconies, and the layout is very beautiful.
There are toilets on both floors, and two bathrooms downstairs, which are also very clean. I won't mention the smart toilets, which are normal in Japan.
The most important thing to mention is that they actually have coin-operated washing machines (which should be specially bought for the convenience of travelers to wash clothes). It is very considerate. When you go out to play, especially when you go out for more than ten days, you will be moved to cry when you see washing machines and dryers in the homestay (many hotels and homestays in Japan do not have washing machines, because there are laundries everywhere on the road. Of course, I am talking about budget hotels, high-end hotels have everything).
Secondly, the location of their home is absolutely unique. There is a huge supermarket within a few hundred meters. I guess it should be the largest shopping center in Matsumoto Castle. After all, it is also a small city; it is also very close to Matsumoto Ancient City, a few hundred meters away, and there are art galleries and other attractions a few hundred meters away. It is really convenient to go anywhere.
Finally, the landlord even has a whole wall of introductions to various attractions in Matsumoto, as well as maps. He is also very enthusiastic to introduce us to where to play nearby, which is really good.

A hot spring hotel in the forest! I was amazed.
In Japan, hot springs ♨️ are a way to relax and a cultural symbol. Shirahone Onsen is a natural hot spring near Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. The hot spring water is transparent when it first gushes out, but it turns milky white after a period of oxidation due to the calcium and other substances it contains.
It's such a blessing to soak in a hot spring in the cold winter! ❗️
Soak in a hot spring in the snow
Breathe in the fresh air and watch the snowflakes ❄️ slowly fall
Highlights of Shirahone Onsen 👇
1⃣️ Hot spring experience in the mountains: Shirahone Onsen is located in the mountains at an altitude of about 1,200 meters, offering a refreshing climate and charming natural environment.
2⃣️ Beautiful scenery in all seasons: The hot spring is surrounded by lush forests and clear streams, allowing you to experience the changing seasons and the beauty of nature.
3⃣️ Skin-moisturizing hot spring water: The spring water of Shirahone Onsen contains sodium, calcium, and other ingredients that can gently moisturize your skin, allowing you to feel the care of your skin while soaking in the hot spring.
4⃣️ Long history: Shirahone Onsen has preserved many historical buildings and facilities, inheriting a rich history and culture.
5⃣️ Rich tourist attractions nearby: There are a variety of attractions around Shirahone Onsen, allowing you to explore the surrounding natural scenery while soaking in the hot spring.
🚄Transportation
Matsumoto → Shin-Shimashima → Sawando Bus Terminal → Shirahone Onsen
Take the Matsumoto Electric Railway from Matsumoto Station to Shin-Shimashima Station, then transfer to a bus to Shirahone Onsen. Renting a car or driving is more convenient.
Shirahone Onsen is relatively niche and not very large, so transportation is not very convenient. If you want to go to Shirahone Onsen, the easiest way is to buy a bus ticket at the ticket office of Matsumoto Station. There are buses from Matsumoto Station to Shirahone Onsen every day.
A peaceful trip to Kamikochi, Japan: spiritual cleansing and dialogue with nature
We stepped into Kamikochi, known as the Japanese Alps, and stood in this quiet valley looking at the distant mountains, which seemed to be covered with golden glory under the sunlight. The water of the gurgling Azusa River is crystal clear, and the green leaves on both sides of the river are dancing gently in the wind, as if to welcome our visit.
Walking through Taisho Pond, the water surface is like a mirror, reflecting the magnificent figure of Mount Kithotaka. We stopped and felt the tranquility here, far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, as if time had stood still here. As we continue walking along the wooden path, we hear the sound of the breeze blowing through the forest tops. Occasionally, a few birds happily shuttle through the forest, as if whispering the story of this world. As the sun gradually rises, we arrive at Mingshen Pond, which is said to be the residence of the mountain god. Standing by the pool, you can feel the mystery and majesty of nature, and your inner worries gradually dissipate, as if you are one with this piece of nature. Every scenery here is like a painting. It doesn't need too much modification. Its original beauty alone is enough to move people.
The journey to Kamikochi is not only a feast of scenery, but also a cleansing of the soul. Here, the harmony and tranquility between heaven and earth allow us to re-recognize the power and beauty of nature. It is a natural paradise that makes people linger☺️

Winter adds a unique charm to Matsumoto Castle. When white snow gently covers the walls and roofs, the contrast between the black castle and the white snow presents a simple yet magnificent beauty. The moat in front of the castle remains clear in the winter wind, reflecting the castle's shadow, making one feel as if they are in an ancient landscape painting. Walking slowly along the path outside the castle, feeling the ancient atmosphere in the cold wind, Matsumoto Castle in winter has a serene power that inspires awe.

It not only showcases the beauty of ancient Japanese architecture but also perfectly combines the seasonal changes of nature with human wisdom. Whether you are a history enthusiast or a tourist seeking winter scenery, Matsumoto Castle is a destination worth exploring in depth. Here, you can feel the passage of time and enjoy moments of peace and beauty.

#100WaysOfTravel
It was a last minute plan to visit Kamikochi.
We boarded the train in Tokyo and travelled all the way to Matsumoto only to find out that the bus tickets to Kamikochi were sold out.
It was our mistake for not planning well in advance.
The timing clashed with Japan's Golden Week public holiday.
Our only option was to stroll around Matsumoto City and visit Matsumoto Castle.
Fortunately, the weather was great, so, we decided to walk back to the train station.
The view along the way was just lovely.

Kamikochi: From Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge
I recently had the most amazing experience exploring Kamikochi, and I thought I'd share my journey with you all. I started my adventure at Taisho Pond Station, where the serene Taisho Pond itself greeted me with its mirror-like surface reflecting the majestic Hotaka Mountain Range. The early morning mist added a magical touch to the scenery, making it a photographer's paradise.
From Taisho Pond Station, I embarked on a picturesque walk towards Kappa Bridge. The trail was well-marked and surrounded by lush greenery, with the sound of the Azusa River accompanying me throughout the hike. The air was crisp and refreshing, and the occasional sighting of wildlife like Japanese macaques and mountain birds added to the charm of the journey.
As I approached Kappa Bridge, I was greeted by breathtaking views of the Azusa River flowing beneath the iconic wooden bridge, framed by towering peaks and dense forests. It was a perfect spot to pause, take in the natural beauty, and snap some photos to capture the essence of Kamikochi.
For those planning a trip to Kamikochi, starting from Taisho Pond Station and walking to Kappa Bridge is a must-do. The approximately 3-kilometer hike (about 1.8 miles) is relatively easy and suitable for all fitness levels, offering numerous opportunities to connect with nature and immerse oneself in the tranquility of the Japanese Alps.
If you're a nature enthusiast or simply looking for a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, Kamikochi won't disappoint. Don't forget to pack some snacks, plenty of water, and your camera—you'll want to capture every moment of this unforgettable journey!
Happy travels, and enjoy exploring Kamikochi as much as I did!

Kamikochi
Kamikochi is located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the western part of Nagano Prefecture. It is surrounded by the Hotaka Mountain Range, Mount Yake, and the Jonen Mountain Range. It is a small basin at an altitude of about 1500 meters and belongs to the Chubu Sangaku National Park. It became known to many mountaineering enthusiasts around the world through the introduction of the 19th-century British missionary and mountaineer Walter Weston.
Kamikochi: A Park in the Midst of the Japan Alps
Kamikochi is one of the most talked-about destinations in Japan in recent years. Why do people go there? Where is it located? Let's take a look at this review.
Kamikochi is located in the Nagano National Park, part of the Northern Japan Alps. It is naturally beautiful in every season. Last year, I went during the autumn foliage season, so this year I decided to go during the spring instead. The park is open from April 17 to November 15 every year (it is closed during winter when there are no vehicles running, and you have to walk in by yourself). The highlights include Taisho Pond and Kappa Bridge, both about 4 km in distance, walking along the Azusa River. On the other side is Myojin Pond, also 4 km away. If you plan to go for a walk, you should allow enough time and prepare appropriate clothing.
Matsumoto-jō Castle
#thingstodo Put this on your list if you want to see castles in Japan. You can get a free tour in English . See kiosk near entry . Walk around moat is free but entry fee for castle . Best photos are in afternoon. The red bridge on the north west corner is a good photo spot. Walk directly south on the Main Street to get great local noodles. You can walk it from the train station and easy flat route. In the late Fall you can see the snow capped mountains in the distance.

Getting There - 4-1 Marunouchi, Matsumoto, Nagano City, Japan.
Attractions - Japan’s premier historic Castle, A beautiful Japanese ancient architecture building with five - storey building combining with vermilion bridges and stonework which built in late 16th century. Historic cultural sites. Stunning views of the rice fields from the rooftop.
Entrance fee: 490 to 700 Yen
opening hours: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Matsumoto
The castle in Matsumoto is rather small when compared to Nagoya, but you can access to the top. Everyone will be given a plastic bag for putting your shoe in and walk with bare feet. Some of the stairs are really steep, high (approximately 40cm per step) and narrow (but still keep 2 ways at the same time). Definitely need to watch out while climbing up and down.
Overall, worthwhile to pay a visit!
The most splendid mountain scenery in 🇯🇵
📍Kamikochi (上高地)
Kamikochi in Nagano Prefecture is one of the most beautiful mountainous places in Japan. It offers breathtaking views through all seasons but it’s said to be the most beautiful in autumn and summer. I went there in summer and was very surprised by its beauty. The majestic mountain ranges seem to embrace the surrounding landscape, the clear water flowing on the Azusa River, the green forest, all create a wonderful picture of nature.
When traveling to Kamikochi I recommend you to:
1. Experience the spectacular views of the Hotaka Range peaks from Kappabashi Bridge. And if you come there in summer, try sitting by the Azusa river and touch the water, it’s surprisingly freezing.
2. Take a hike out to Myojin Pond
3. Go for a trekking adventure in the alpine wonderland of the Northern Japan Alps
#japan #mytripvlog #awesomepic #summervacation #celebratewithtrip #2023travelwish #kamikochi
This bridge is the "city center" of peaceful and tranquilat Kamikochi. 5mins walk from the bus terminal, several hotels along with restaurants, shops and snack counters are located at each side of the bridge.
Further down (same side of the bus terminal) you can find free public toilet if you dont feel like donating 100yen to use the toilet at the bus terminal. Another 5 mins further is the nice konashidaira campsite.
Great place with a nice view! We really had a nice time, even though we walked many km. I will totally come again in the future, if i have the chance.
Kappa bashi
Kappa Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Azusa River in the center of Kamikochi, not far from the bus terminal. Several hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops can be found around the bridge. The structure of the bridge is wooden and it has become a distinctive symbol of Kamikochi.
Kappa Bridge is especially popular as a photo spot with a terrific view of the Hotaka Peaks and Mt. Myojindake that can been seen when facing upriver. Looking downriver, one has a good view of Mt. Yakedake, the iconic peak at the entryway to Kamikochi whose smoking crater reminds us that it is a very active volcano.
Kappabashi is the center of Kamikochi, and around the Kappabashi bridge you can find amenities like a visitors center, small restaurants and hotels, and some shops. This hike covers mostly flat terrain and requires little to no hiking experience.
If you want to do hike you can go to the Myojin Pond and back to Kappabashi via a different trail. This will take an additional 3.5 hours, and it is very much worth the trek. Myojin Pond is another famous highlight in Kamikochi with a tranquil atmosphere, a small shrine, and pretty foliage in autumn.
Japan Alps trekking for beginners
Kamikochi is surprisingly accessible and relatively “low effort” for a tourist to enjoy the full majesty of nature. Taking the Alpico bus from Matsumoto Station to Taisho Pond takes about 1.5hr and you can start the leisurely trek upwards, or simply continue riding the bus all the way to Kamikochi bus terminal where it is bustling with food shop and the amazing view from the Kappa Bridge. Take note the route is usually closed from November for Winter.

Japan Alps: Kamikochi, Nagano Prefecture
Located in the birthplace of the Japanese Alps, Kamikochi offers breathtaking views and access to your next adventure.
The natural history of Kamikochi is one of great elemental upheavals occurring over many thousands of years, though some of these were also quite recent. The mountains and valleys were shaped in part by glacial activity, evidence of which can still be seen in some of the most prominent peaks. Another major player in the formation of the area was Mt. Yakedake, whose eruption over 14,000 years ago changed the course of the Azusa River, causing it to run through the basin in which present day Kamikochi and Matsumoto are located.
Mt. Yakedake would again play a role in shaping Kamikochi’s landscape when another eru#asia tion in the summer of 1915 dammed the Azusa River, creating Taisho Pond. It should be mentioned that Mt. Yakedake is the only active volcano in the Northern Alps and still proclaims its fury to the heavens by constantly emitting a plume of smoke.

Matsumoto Castle
Absolutely stunning castle.
You can get inside and see a lot of historical things including ancient guns and costumes. Photograph is prohibited inside the castle and you have to take shoes off.
A polythene bag is provided for carrying the shoes.
You can walk or get a bus from Matsumoto station.
Normally it doesn't take one hour to cover inside.
Staircases can be narrow and high angle(~70). So it makes nervous sometimes. but safe.
I suggest you to visit there around 3pm. so you see everything in daylight and have enough time to wait 6pm until Illumination starts.

matsumoto jujo
visit with a friend.
The food and the rooms are very good. In the dinner course, I was impressed by how delicious the vegetables were. For drinks, I had half the wine, all of which were considered to go well with the food and easy to drink.
I stayed at Koyanagi this time, but it was quiet and I could relax with the smell of the new tatami mats. Too bad I didn't have time to take a slow look at the library, but I'd love to visit again.
The only thing I would like to see improved is that the letters on the guide in the room and the amenities in the room are small. I wanted to give it a minimalistic feel, but depending on the age of the person staying at the hotel, the inconvenience may outweigh the inconvenience.
Regarding the lock-related system, even though it's described on the homepage, it doesn't appear to be operating perfectly, and I'm afraid it will take some time to check.
There are a few things missing, but I think this is a great place to spend some relaxing time. I wrote a bit of discontent above, but I feel the friendliness of the staff is trying to cover it up wonderfully
Matsumoto Castle is one of the most complete and beautiful among Japan's original and historic castles among Himeji and Kumamoto Castle. It is located at Nagano prefecture, Japan. Matsumoto Castle is a very popular cherry blossom spot due to its thousand of plums. The castle is a 15 minute walk or a 5 minute bus ride on the "Town Sneaker" Northern Course bus loop line from JR Matsumoto Station. If you are a person to love checking historic sites and places when travelling, this place most definitely lived up to the hype.

Tashiro Wetlands
Tashiro Wetlands and Tashiro Pond are one of the famous attractions in Kamikochi, known for their rich ecology😍 The scenery is beautiful, with crystal clear water. Surrounded by wetlands, the autumn leaves turn red and yellow, reflecting on the mirror-like lake surface, creating a picturesque scene like a colorful palette. It's like a paradise on earth! The wetlands also present different views under different lighting, so you can see different charms at different times😇 Additionally, there are several small islands scattered in the pond, which look a bit like rice fields from a distance.
