Day Trip to Wuzhen West Scenic Area (Xizha)
I didn’t have much time to spare so I took a train from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Tongxiang, grabbed a taxi at the arrival station and made my way to Xizha. The #watertown is truly picturesque and peaceful. There was not that many crowd on a Wednesday afternoon. Every other corner is a nice photo spot. Needless to say, a waterboat ride is a must! Wished I could spend more than 4 hours here just to bask in the ambience and flow with the good vibes.

Wuzhen - dayview vs nighview in a beautiful water town
For an impromptu day trip, I decided to go to a watertown and picked Wuzhen as I heard it’s the most famous one. Did a quick research and found there are two scenic parts; East Gate and West Gate. Though some people recommended just visiting the West Gate (more popular), I visited the East Gate as well and I’m glad I did it! It’s smaller and quieter with less things and stores compared to the West Gate and has a bit different vibe as it’s more peaceful and has less people.
The dayview was nice but I personally liked the nightview better because it gave more a ancient oriental vibe with lights. It was really really beautiful. It’s such a historic scenic town. In the West Gate zone, it’s quite easy to find food and drinks and souvenir stores. I’d love to bring my friends here if they visit China.

The Simatai Great Wall
Gubei Water Town is a gorgeous fairy-tale town situated below the Great Wall. The Simatai Great wall looms so high above the water town, it gives the impression that it may be floating in the clouds, as the lights of wall switch on at dusk and are just barely visible through a thin layer of mist that gently veils the mountain.
I suggest a walk up to the Great Wall, the scenery is incredible, and then to take the cable car down.
The water town is best explored in the evening/night, it really comes to life and there are many types of delicious foods and beautiful trinkets to be bought.
Enjoy your Fairy-tale escape☺️

Zhouzhuang: the Most Charming Water Town
If you want an experience that includes Chinese history, culture, art, and food, this is the place! Zhouzhuang isn't far from the heart of Suzhou, and every part of this water township is delightful. The bridges, canals, and alleyways look like they fell out of paintings. The markets are extensive, with food and art and embroidery that dazzles the senses. On my trip to Suzhou, this was definitely my favorite place to visit, and I'm so glad that I went! #suzhou #zhouzhuang #watertown #solotravel #summervacation #historicculture
Wuzhen, the Night Queen of Zhejiang
Wuzhen is one of the six famous ancient water towns south of the Yangtze River. It’s within the triangle formed by three top tourist cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. It has charmingly restored architecture and canals. The charm and the elegance of this ancient water town is undeniable. It is more than 1000 years old town with rich history and architectural elegance. It is about an hour long drive from Suzhou, China. This place is vast and suggested plan would be two days of itinerary with one overnight. You can at least leave with some satisfactions. If you don't try the boat, well your visit here is meaning less. Entrance ticket is 150 rmb and boat ticket one way is 60 rmb per person. Yes, it is bit expensive though but for a AAAAA tourist place, this amount is worth spending.

Tongli 🇨🇳 Suzhou
A nice spot for a weekend away.
Tongli is a small water town with nice cafés, handmade craft stores, restaurants and food vendors. At night the town is lit by lanterns and spotlights which make it feel very cosy and welcoming.
Tongli is definitely a great spot for relaxing and taking the day slowly as it's a quaint town with temples, historic residences and cobbled lanes by the water. The food in town was generally salty and sweet and the people were very friendly.
We cycled to Tongli from Shanghai but you could take the fast train, metro or taxi to get there too.
There are lots of very affordable b&b options throughout the town, but you will still need to pay for entry to town at most.

Wuzhen Watertown 🇨🇳 Zhejiang
In China we have been to a lot of watertowns, and they a perfect day trip to relax and try new foods.
Wuzhen is easily one of my favourites, so much so that we literally spent the entire day from the crack of dawn till the town closed at night.
In Wuzhen you can see them making soy sauce in a traditional manner (pic3) and there are so many tasty treats they make all throughout the town. The history about the fabrics that were made there are on display too in a free to walk around old mill.
In the town there are bars and restaurants for the evening to wind down in. Some are quiet and on the waterfront and other by the pagoda with a little music.
The fee to enter the town is worth it for sure and when family and friends travel to China, Wuzhen will be on the list as it's clean, interesting and a great spot to try Chinese food that's is fairly friendly to Western tastes.

Jinxi, The Hometown of Folk Museums in China
Jinxi is located in Jiangsu Province, China, It is a well-known historical town with a history of more than 2,000 years. We drove to Jinxi from Suzhou (about 23 km). wonderfully delicate watery town. It is surrounded by clear water and many waterways snaking through the town. Jinxi has 36 bridges and 72 brick kilns. Day trip to “Venice of the East”
Your trip to Shanghai isn’t complete if you don’t have the chance the gorgeous small water town of Zhujiajiao!
This water town is located in the outskirts of Shanghai and easily accessible by metro.
Once you’ve reached the station, walk about 15minutes to reach the entrance of the old town.
Once you get there, I’d suggest you spend few hours walking around and enjoying the beauty of this little water town.
I speak very little Chinese but still had the chance to converse with some locals. They were super friendly !
It really is a nice peaceful and beautiful area.
Have fun!
PS: I had no problem getting in. I had to sign a form and was let in right away.

Venice of the east
Pingjianglu, known as the venice of the east is a popular tourist spot of Gusu district in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. This rich historical street has a number of alleys, a long canal, shops, and wells. When you will walk through some of the alleys, you will listen Pingtan, the Suzhou originated narrative music performs in Suzhou dialect. It will make you feel nostalgic. Every time I come here, I have the same feelings. Usually, during weekends this place is crowded with many tourists. You can visit here at any weekday if you don't like crowd. And don't think about holidays! You will even feel the breathing of others over your neck😂

Wuzhen's Watertown
#wuzhen #watertown #winter Exploring Wuzhen's Watertown with our sons, Adryan and Wyatt, who were visiting from Indonesia.
It was very cold, but that just made the day more memorable
Emily had her new coat, I had my new hat, and we were all enjoying the crisp air and clear sky.
The cold and the early hour all but guaranteed we were not going to have a crowd. We had two small Thermos of hot water, and that made being outside bearable.

Rural Watertown near Shanghai
Perfect day trip from Shanghai, smaller then the well known Zhujiajiao, but more authentic. We visited during the Lunar New Year Holiday and people were buying all kinds of foods for the festivities.
There is one big shopping street were you can buy different local specialities like salted pork and a special kind of dumplings.
It also has an art street and a promenade next to the canal with many restaurants.
We also spotted a lot of cute coffee shops (closed due to the holidays)
Definitely worth the visit if you have a free day in Shanghai!
