Free Architectural Trail?
#stylomilotrail
Going on a trip to Singapore but with limited budget? Exploring free attractions is an alternative to the typical ticketed tourist spots in the country. The attractions might be free but they are considered as the icons of Singapore, the unique architectural gems of Singapore. You don't need to be an architecture fan to be able to appreciate them as they're simply just majestic on their own. Listed below are some of the structures you need to visit.
Jewel Changi Airport is the shopping mall connected to the airport of Singapore. It is considered as a tourist attraction due to the design of the structure and features of the mall. Designed by Safdie Architects, the most impressive feat of Jewel is the donut-shaped, glass-panelled roof of the main atrium. It is Donut-shaped as it houses the rain vortex. How are there no traditional columns as support? An architectural and engineering feat!
Gardens by the bay is located just behind the iconic Marina Bay Sands. The expansive garden boasts a lot of attractions and spending a day here will definitely tire you out. The main architectural gems the garden can offer are the cooled conservatories and the supertrees. Whenever I come here, I always make it a point to watch the lights show happening every night. I would also recommend experiencing the OCBC skyway at sunset time.
Marina Bay Sands Singapore is one of the faces of Singapore. You don't need to check in to the hotel to be able to appreciate the structure. Just looking at it from afar and from different viewpoints will suffice. But if you do check-in though, be sure to take a dip or swim at the famous rooftop infinity pool.
Artscience Museum is one of my favorite attractions in Singapore. You would not miss this structure as it's shaped liked a lily. It is situated just by the waterfront of the shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. i am a fan and would always be on the lookout for new exhibitions I can visit. Aside from the changing exhibitions, they have permanent exhibitions like Future World that you wouldn't want to skip. If you don't want to spend too much on the exhibitions, there's a cheap architecture tour of the museum that's only 5sgd that you can avail. Be sure to check the schedule on their website.
The Helix Bridge is just located behind the Artscience Museum. It is open 24 hours as it's a functioning pedestrian bridge. It's unmissable due to the DNA-like design and even more unmissable at night due to it being illuminated. It's a walkway that connects you to the other side of the river, the Esplanade side.
Lastly, if you want to look at the city from a much higher vantage point, take a ride at the Singapore Flyer. It's a ferris wheel located just near the Promenade MRT station. Due to its massive size, you can get a view of the flyer around the area and you don't need to buy tickets just to look or take photos of it.
Among the structures above, Jewel is the only one located far with the remaining five are located just next to each other. Enjoy!
