Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is the largest ancient city ruins of the Maya Classic period, located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Within the vast jungle, there are numerous ruins such as the Temple of the Warriors and the Observatory. Among them, the Castillo (Spanish for 'castle') stands majestically in the center, a grand pyramid approximately 24 meters high with nine levels. Including the temple at the top, the total number of steps on its four sides is 365, representing the Maya calendar year.
The Castillo is famous for the descent of Kukulkan, a phenomenon that occurs on the spring and autumn equinoxes. Kukulkan is an agricultural god depicted as a feathered serpent. As the sun sets in the west, the shadow of the pyramid forms the body of the serpent on the side wall of the steps, merging with the serpent head statue at the base of the steps to create the appearance of a giant serpent. Additionally, during the summer and winter solstices, one side of the pyramid is evenly divided into light and shadow by the sun's rays.
