Trip Moments Recommendations
Fenghuang Ancient Town
If you are planning to visit Zhangjiajie, make sure to include a trip to 'Fenghuang', the ancient riverside village by the Tuojiang River.
Fenghuang can be enjoyed both during the day and at night. During the day, it's quite relaxing, but when night falls, 'Fenghuang' transforms into a brightly lit town with colorful lights illuminating the bridges, houses, and shops, creating a completely different atmosphere from the daytime.
We recommend staying overnight here for at least one night, as the town is quite large and offers numerous photo opportunities.
🚄 Transportation: High-speed Train: Fenghuanggucheng Station. Once you arrive at the station, you can take a taxi or call a DiDi to take you to the ancient town.
“Monkey”ing around in Zhangjiajie
One of the best elements of a Zhangjiajie trip is the encounters with these mischief makers.
Some tips to keep in mind:
- Don’t feed the monkeys!
A lot of locals will be throwing food at the monkeys, but the moment you do, they’ll start following you and becoming more aggressive. Plus, it’s just a crappy thing to do. These animals can eat grass and they tend to rummage through the trash cans too. They are not lacking in food at all.
- Be mindful of your bags.
I saw some monkeys steal a woman’s tote bag and take the items out. They also got very territorial when she tried to take her stuff back. So when you visit the park, try to keep your items in a zippable bag. Eventually the monkeys got bored and left, but not before stealing some feminine pads from her.
- Keep your distance.
For the most part, these monkeys are used to tourists. However, mama monkeys with their babies, mating pairs, and solitary males can react negatively if you get too close. My friend got a little too close to a monkey who took aim at her with its claws. Thankfully she was unharmed, but the same can’t be said for her jacket.
Just use common sense (i.e. don’t try to touch or feed the animals) and you’ll be just fine.

Favorite place in China - Zhangjiajie
Went to Zhangjiajie to see the Avatar Mountains and we had really high expectations but honestly it was even better than imagined! The landscape is beautiful and the park is huge! I would suggest spending at least 2 days in the park!
We also got the unlimited cable pass which was really nice because it saved us time but also the views from the elevator and cable are incredible!

Discovering Zhangjiajie National Forest Park ! 🤗
We came here in mid November and temperature ranges between 7°C and 12°C. It can get a little chilly when it rains/ when the wind is strong, so it’s advisable to bring a down jacket and/or a windbreaker. Plenty of food options available within different locations of the attraction (not too pricey either) but taste is pretty average. If you’re picky, bring along some snacks. We started the tour from the South Gate at 8am and ended in the East Gate at 430pm, possible to finish all major attractions within a day.

An Unforgettable Adventure: Tianmen Mountain’s 999 Steps and the Glass Walkway
Tianmen Mountain offers one of the most exhilarating experiences for adventure and nature lovers. To reach the famous 999 steps, I took a bus up the mountain, traveling along the winding “99 Turns” road. This section of the journey was an adventure in itself, with each curve offering stunning views of the surrounding landscapes as the bus ascended through lush greenery and dramatic terrain.
The ascent along the iconic 999 steps was both challenging and rewarding, offering beautiful vistas at every step. A standout feature of Tianmen Mountain is the glass walkway near the summit. Suspended high above the valley, walking along this transparent path was both thrilling and awe-inspiring, with panoramic views of the mountains and valleys below.
After exploring the summit, I descended via the cable car, a relaxing and scenic way to unwind after the climb. The 30-minute ride down provided sweeping views of the mountain landscape, giving me a fresh perspective on the natural beauty of the area. Whether you’re tackling the 999 steps, walking along the glass walkway, or enjoying the scenic cable car ride, Tianmen Mountain is a must-visit destination that beautifully combines adventure with nature.

Zhangjiajie -Pictures don’t do you justice!!! Breathing taking views!!!
I’ve been dreaming of visiting Zhangjiajie in Hunan for the past 5 years! I finally visited all the sites.
Zhangjiajie National Park (pic 2 and 5) consists of a few area and it’s absolutely huge- you can easily spend a couple of days here especially if you want to explore the beautiful park- however as I was pressed for time I only spent a day here and mostly visited the Wulingyuan scenic area.
However, my absolutely favourite has to be Tianmen Mountain- (pic 1,3,4) - truly, pictures can’t capture the beauty of this place. To get to the top, you take the cable car, which apparently is the "longest passenger cableway of high mountains in the world" - it ascends 1,279 m (4,196 ft)- I can only describe it as that your eyes are rewarded with magnificent views of blue skies (depending on the weather of course), luscious greenery and emerald coloured lakes as you are slowly transported up.
When you reach the top, you feel as if you are truly on top of the world. As you take a picture of the back drop of Tianmen Mountain (pic 3,4) - the literal translation is “sky door” mountain - meaning the door to heaven- I would say the description definitely fits it well!

Rising like silent sentinels from the mist, the stone pillars of Zhangjiajie stand timeless and sere
Embarking on a solo trip to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, famously known as the Avatar Mountains, was an adventure that deeply resonated with my spirit of exploration. The journey began with a scenic train ride through the Chinese countryside, where rolling hills and quaint villages set the tone for the natural wonders to come. Arriving in Zhangjiajie, the excitement was palpable as I glimpsed the towering sandstone pillars that define this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The first day was devoted to exploring the Tianzi Mountain area. Armed with a map, a sense of wonder, and an insatiable curiosity, I boarded the cable car that whisked me up to the peaks. The ride itself was breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the forested valleys and the iconic quartz-sandstone columns. Stepping off the cable car, I was immediately immersed in a landscape that seemed almost otherworldly. The pillars, some of which reach over 200 meters high, stood like ancient sentinels, their sheer cliffs cloaked in verdant vegetation.
Hiking along the trails, I was struck by the serenity and solitude of the park. The occasional rustle of leaves or the distant call of a bird were the only sounds breaking the tranquil silence. At every turn, I encountered new and stunning vistas: narrow paths winding through lush forests, stone steps leading to secluded viewpoints, and mist-shrouded peaks that evoked a sense of timelessness. The highlight was undoubtedly the Tianzi Pavilion, a traditional pagoda perched on a high peak, offering an unparalleled 360-degree view of the majestic surroundings.
The second day was dedicated to the Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, home to the famous "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain." Taking the Bailong Elevator, the world’s highest outdoor lift, was an exhilarating experience. In just a few minutes, I ascended over 300 meters, emerging into a landscape that seemed plucked straight from a fantasy film. The ethereal beauty of the floating mountains, shrouded in mist, left me speechless. I followed the paths that wound through the peaks, each turn revealing new angles of these gravity-defying structures.
One particularly memorable moment was standing on the glass skywalk, a transparent bridge that juts out from a cliff, offering a vertigo-inducing view of the valley below. It was a thrilling reminder of nature’s grandeur and my own smallness within it.
Traveling alone allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience, moving at my own pace and taking the time to absorb the park’s beauty. The solitude heightened my appreciation of the natural world and provided a space for reflection and introspection. My journey to the Avatar Mountains was more than just a trip; it was a profound encounter with nature's raw, unspoiled splendor.

Immerse Yourself in the Avatar Mountains
💙 What a stunning sight!! When we arrived in Zhangjiajie, I could see the Avatar Mountains from a distance. I thought they were stunning, even from far away. But oh, I didn't know anything until I finally got to see them up close.
🚠 I opted to take the cable car most of the way up the mountain. You'll have to buy a ticket for the cable car which will cost you around 96rmb round trip! The journey is short, around 6 minutes long, but it's a breathtaking sight.
⛰️ Once up the mountain, you can follow the trails around to see the natural beauty of the mountains. There are multiple look-out spots that are perfect for photos.
🌈 If you're looking for more fun in Zhangjiajie, you can also choose to ride up the Bailong Elevator, the tallest outdoor elevator in the world. This elevator takes you approximately 2 minutes and will cost you 65rmb. This gives you a stunning view of the Hallelujah Mountain, a staple of Zhangjiajie. It is such a unique experience that you don't want to miss.
✨ Zhangjiajie is such a breathtaking place, the Avatar Mountains should definitely be on your travel bucket list!

Walk on Glass Above China's Grand Canyon
⛰️ One of the longest glass bridges in the world, the Zhangjiajie glass bridge, or footpath, was definitely something unlike anything I have ever seen before. Built between two mountain cliffs, the bridge overlooks a beautiful canyon. While it may be crowded, there is still plenty of space and opportunities to get the perfect photo!
👟 Before you go on the bridge, you'll have to put on shoe covers! This protects the glass from getting scuffed by shoes. The shoe covers are included in the ticket price and will be handed to you as you enter the top of the mountain.
🧗🏻♀️ Once you've walked the bridge and taken in the scenery, you have endless activities at your fingertips. Most famously, the bridge holds the world's highest bungee jump, stationed at a whopping 285 meters tall. If that's a little too hard core for you, there is also the option to rock climb, zip line, or experience a one of a kind VR journey. Once you're done up top, you can either simply climb down the mountain, or take a slide down, which brings you through a scenic route filled with trees and laughter from the fun you'll have.
🛶 Once you've completed your activities up top, spend some time down in the canyon. Here you can take a boat tour, where you can sit and relax while taking in the natural beauty around you. You can see stunning waterfalls and wildlife as the water carries you through the mountains.

The 999 steps leading up to this natural arch are a challenge, but reaching the top is incredibly rewarding. The view from the cave is awe-inspiring, making the climb well worth the effort.
The glass skywalks are another thrilling aspect of Tianmen Mountain. Walking on these transparent pathways, suspended thousands of feet above the ground, is both terrifying and exhilarating. The feeling of walking on air, with a sheer drop beneath, is an experience I'll never forget.

ZhangJiaJie - City of Heaven
In Zhangjiajie, my adventure took an unexpected turn as dense fog draped the landscape, shrouding the towering peaks and mystical forests in an ethereal veil. The absence of the sun lent an air of mystery to the surroundings, transforming the experience into a journey through a surreal dreamscape.
As I ascended Tianmen Mountain via the cable car, the fog played tricks on perception, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The glass skywalk, normally revealing dizzying depths, now seemed to disappear into the mist, heightening the sense of adventure and discovery.
Exploring Zhangjiajie National Forest Park under the cloak of fog added an enigmatic charm to the iconic quartz-sandstone pillars. The pillars emerged like ancient sentinels from the mist, their silhouettes evoking a sense of timelessness. The Hallelujah Mountain, obscured yet majestic, seemed to float in a sea of clouds, creating an almost spiritual ambiance.
Navigating the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, the fog added an extra layer of challenge and allure. The glass bridge, now softened by the mist, transformed into a path suspended in the clouds, making each step a blend of excitement and trepidation. The snow on the mountain roads, while posing obstacles, added a pristine beauty to the rugged terrain.
Embracing the unexpected weather, I found solace in the serenity of the fog-laden landscapes. The absence of direct sunlight allowed me to appreciate the subtleties of Zhangjiajie's beauty, revealing a different side of its charm. The snow-dusted roads, though challenging, added a touch of winter magic to the journey.
As I descended from the misty heights of Zhangjiajie, the memories of a fog-kissed adventure lingered. The absence of the sun had transformed the landscapes into a poetic canvas, where nature's elements collaborated to create an experience both challenging and enchanting, leaving an indelible mark on my journey through this mesmerizing destination.#Zhangjiajie
