#Travel to Luang Prabang 3 days 2 nights, World Heritage City, Lao PDR
#Visit Luang Prabang for 3 days and 2 nights, experience the charming world heritage city of Laos. The beginning of this trip was because I wanted to try riding the Laos-China high-speed train for once, so I planned a short trip during my holiday to visit Luang Prabang.
Day 1
- Start at the Vientiane high-speed train station
- Check in at Mali House
- Chill out at T56 Cafe and Bar
- Walk around the Luang Prabang Museum
- Enjoy the view of Luang Prabang Phousi Temple Viewpoint
- Walk around the Night Market
Day 2
- See the beauty of Kuang Si Waterfall
- Tad Mongkol Waterfall
- Taste buffalo milk ice cream
- Stop for a coffee at Full House Cafe along the way
- Wat Xieng Thong, the oldest temple in Luang Prabang
- Wat Saensukharam
- Royal Palace of Luang Prabang
- Tum Wan Restaurant
Day 3
- Give alms in the morning at Luang Prabang Walking Street
- Have breakfast at the famous Prachaniyom restaurant
- Drink coffee at Joma Cafe
- Walk around the Luang Prabang morning market
- Eat croissants at Le Banneton Café French Bakery
- Take the high-speed train back to Vientiane
Summary of expenses
- High-speed train from Vientiane-Luang Prabang First Class 552,000 LAK ~ 900 baht
- High-speed train from Luang Prabang-Vientiane 393,000 LAK ~ 600 baht
- Mali House accommodation for 2 nights 2,300 baht (1,150 baht/person)
- Motorbike rental 120,000 LAK + gas, total 200 baht (100 baht/person)
- Food + entrance fees + car rental, total approximately 3,500 baht/person
These approximate expenses do not include travel expenses from Bangkok to Vientiane. It depends on your convenience where you start. As for Fern's travel, she took a bus from Bangkok to Vientiane. She took the bus both ways. It saved money but was a bit tiring. Honestly, if you only want to visit Luang Prabang, I recommend a direct flight. It's much more convenient. But this trip, the reason I used this method of transportation was because the main purpose was to try the Laos-China high-speed train.
For those who want to travel abroad with few holidays, I recommend Luang Prabang as another option. It's really good for the heart.

Easy Hike, Amazing Views✨
Phousi Hill is a great place to visit during your trip to Luang Prabang. The walk to the top is easy, and along the way, you can enjoy many Buddhas, temples, and beautiful views.
Once you reach the top, you will see stunning views of the rivers and the city. Watching the sunset from Phousi Hill is a nice plan, but be aware that it can get crowded, and the area is quite small. If you want to catch the sunset, I recommend arriving at least an hour before the golden hour to find a good spot.
I highly recommend this spot in Luang Prabang!

Tranquility, Spirituality, Slow Moving and Simple Life
The Alms Giving Ceremony, or “Tak Bat,” is one of the most iconic and spiritually significant rituals in Luang Prabang. Taking place at dawn, it is a daily procession where Buddhist monks, dressed in saffron robes, walk silently through the streets to collect food offerings from local devotees. This tradition has been practiced for centuries and is a reflection of the deep-rooted Buddhist culture in Laos. Visitors are welcome to respectfully observe or participate by offering sticky rice, fruit, or other simple foods, but it’s important to follow guidelines such as dressing modestly and remaining quiet during the ceremony.
After the Alms Giving Ceremony, many visitors head to the nearby morning market, a vibrant hub of local activity that showcases the region’s agricultural bounty and culinary traditions. The market is bustling with vendors selling an incredible variety of items:
• Fresh Vegetables and Fruits: Seasonal produce from the surrounding farms, including exotic fruits like dragon fruit, pomelos, and tamarind.
• Snacks and Street Food: You’ll find an array of traditional Lao snacks, such as sticky rice cakes, grilled meats, and crispy Mekong riverweed.
• Sauces and Condiments: Homemade chili pastes, fermented fish sauces, and other spicy dips are popular items that add intense flavor to Lao cuisine.
• Local Textiles: Handwoven Lao textiles, including scarves, skirts, and traditional clothing, offer a glimpse into the artisanal heritage of the region.
• Bee Larvae: For the more adventurous eaters, bee larvae are often sold as a local delicacy, enjoyed either fried or cooked with herbs.
Exploring the morning market after the Alms Giving Ceremony is a sensory experience that offers a deeper connection to the local way of life. It’s a great opportunity to engage with vendors, learn about Lao ingredients, and even pick up a few unique souvenirs.

Charming gem in Luang Prabang
Kuang Si Waterfalls are located in Luang Prabang, Laos. The waterfalls are absolutely stunning, with multiple levels of water flowing into many pools. I was amazed by the largest waterfall, it was incredibly beautiful.
There are different ways to reach the waterfalls. In my case, I rented a motorbike, which allowed me to stop anywhere I wanted to take photos. You can also go by van or tuk-tuk.
The hike to the waterfalls is very easy and suitable for everyone. At the beginning of the trail, there is a bear sanctuary where you can see many bears relaxing in their habitat.
I recommend this activity to anyone visiting Luang Prabang!

Southeast Asia's hidden gem
Among southeast Asia, Vietnam and Thailand are among the most celebrated destinations to visit. But Luang prabang is still among the unpopular destinations. Due to the geography of the town, it can be one of the best choices to visit during the summer season. This small beautiful city has a lot to offer. Starting from breathtaking mountain views to turquoise waterfalls, everything is just amazing. Leaving the chaotic streets of big cities, I enjoyed the peaceful environment of this UNESCO world heritage site. The Mekong and Namkhan rivers, make this town a perfect place to enjoy the beautiful sunsets from the river cruises.
The historical street is the perfect place to stay as it has a plethora of accomodations starting from budget hostels to 5 star accomodations. Most of the tourist spots are situated in this street and can be visited by walking from one place to another. But mostly tourist enjoy their time by renting the scooters.
The morning and night markets provide the best opportunity to experience local and fresh food.
The night market in Luang prabang is a perfect place to enjoy a variety of cuisines from different corners of the world at a very affordable price.
The town is well connected to other places by train, bus, boat cruises and air.

Whispers of calm along the Mekong river
Enchanting Luang Prabang, nestled at the confluence of the majestic Mekong River and the tranquil Nam Khan, weaves a spell with its UNESCO-protected heritage and timeless allure. This captivating Laotian gem is a must-visit for travelers seeking serenity and splendor.
The perfect place to explore ancient temples adorned with intricate mosaics, to visit the Mount Phousi with its panoramic vistas, to enjoy the slow pace of life along the Mekong banks drinking a coffee at the sunset. But luang prabang is much more: I suggest to explore the labyrinthine lanes of the old town, where French colonial architecture mingles seamlessly with traditional Lao houses, each adorned with vibrant bougainville.
Luang Prabang is more than a beautiful town: it represents the art of slowing down, appreciating the simple things, and connecting with the rhythm of life itself.
