#timetotravel If you are doing the Silk Road Tour then do not miss this place. It just a wonder how this oasis survived in the middle of the desert for such a long time. It is I guess the only remaining oasis along the silk road that hasn't dried up yet. But of course, it needed human intervention. They didn't want to lose this oasis in Dunhuang so the all worked hard to preserve this and now it has become a famous tourist attraction along the silk road. It is a far walk from the main entrance so make sure you go there early to avoid too many tourists as well. If you want the best view of the crescent moon lake then I suggest that you climb up the sand dune. It becomes too hot during the day so make sure to applu sun cream and their pavillion offers drinks anyway for extra charge. Entrance Fee: 100 RMB ( but since the lake is far away from the entrance you can either opt to walk or pay extra to ride a camel or a mini shuttle bus. Crecent moon pool Little lake surrounded my mountains of sand dunes that can be up to 300 meters high. The area is super nice and there are lots of activities to enjoy as camel ride, sand sliding etc. We spent a whole day doing different activities like hiking to the top of the sand dunes and driving ATV. You can also chill by the pavilions just by the lake. It’s worth it to buy the sand protective socks that they sell before you enter the area because the sand will get everywhere I think we paid 20rmb. To top the day off we had afternoon tea at the roof of The Silk Road Dunhuang hotel that has the most amazing view over the sandy mountains. Downtown Dunhuang also has a very nice night market that’s worth a trip for shopping and food. Mogao Caves Most people come to see the Mogao caves in Dunhuang. The stunning paintings inside caves. Wall murals with Buddhist history. It’s absolutely a must to go there. I have been two times actually. Is this China? Yes! I know it’s hard to believe but this fascinating desert is found in Gansu province. You can arrive by plane, but we took a long drive through Qinghai province to arrive. The sand dunes are flawless, the views are outstanding, and the experience is unforgettable. Don’t miss out on this unique destination in China! See Dunhuang Again - What an incredible experience! As expected, the show was entirely in Chinese, but it was still a lot of fun. Although my Chinese is not great, I was still able to somewhat understand the story and I was mesmerized by how cool it was. The actors were very good and the special effects were great. Getting There - You can type in Crescent lake if you're taking a Didi, take a taxi, you can drive yourself or go with a tour group. Attractions - The scenic are is beautiful. You can enjoy the experience of the desert on the back of a camel, take a helicopter ride, four wheeler or with a buggy ride. You can just climb up the sand hill and enjoy the view from the top. Hotels - There are hotels in close proximity of the desert. You can even experience glamping in a tent in the desert...definitely worth the experience. Food & Restaurants - There's food places like KFC at the entrance. Dunhuang is located in the northwestern province of Gansu. The Crescent Lake is also known as the Crescent Moon Spring, or Yueya Spring. It's history dates back over 2000 years. The oasis is surrounded by towering dunes which offer spectacular views after a challenging ascent. It is strongly advised to avoid being in the dunes in the middle of the day and early afternoon during the summer as it can get very hot. Regardless of the time you visit pack water, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Prepare to get SANDY! Getting There - The Crescent Lake is around 6km from Dunhuang city and is easily accessible by taxi or bus. If I have to pick only one must visit site in China, I will choose Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. It’s the most well-preserved treasure of Buddhism art and history from more than 1,000years ago. There are over 750 caves built from 5th to 14th century, about 500 of them were decorated with murals and sculptures. 60 of them are opened to the public now. An entry ticket includes a visit to 8 random caves with tour guide (in mandarin only during pandemic time). Mingsha mountain is literally translated to the “Singing sand mountain) which is about 5km from Dunhuang city center. The natural phenomenon of singing sand from wind makes the name. Beautiful sand dunes not far from city and the crescent spring in the middle attract visitors from all over the country. It is particularly pretty during sunset. These pictures were taken in Dunhuang, China where the silkroad lies. These are themed photos inspired by a fanmous Chinese Drama "Goodbye My Princess" . We also camped out on the desert and it was an incredible experience. Camping Accomodation: Dunhuang Vivian Desert Camping Transportation : Didi or taxi from the airport to the hotel (take note you wont go to the camping site right away because it will only start at 530 pm. ) You will be asked to go to a hotel first and leave your stuff, then just do anything you want. If you arrive early then definitely go to the Mogao Caves or a temple nearby. We are very satisfied with the arrangment. The camp expenses was only around 350 for two people with sand dunes activities, hotpot buffet for dinner with an entertainment and a bonfire fun..
