🇳🇿 White-Water Rafting @ Three Waterfalls in Rotorua
What better place to experience white-water rafting for the first time than Tutea Falls, the tallest commercially rafted waterfall in the world? Tutea Falls is part of the "Three Friends," a trio of waterfalls that includes Kaituna Falls and Okere Falls, all located on the Kaituna River, just a 30-minute drive from Rotorua, New Zealand. The Kaituna River also has some of the warmest water in the region, making it an ideal choice for rafters.

🇳🇿 Rafting at Tutea Falls 📍 Rotorua
During our visit to Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island, my dad and I had an amazing time rafting with Kaituna Cascades at Kaituna River, which is often regarded as one of the best places for white-water rafting, especially for thrill-seekers. What makes the Kaituna River so unique is the presence of the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall—Tutea Falls—which boasts a 7-meter drop. Our guide, who was from the U.S., was highly experienced, though he joked that it was only his second day on the job. Despite his warning that rafts often flip going down the falls, ours didn’t, thanks to his expert instructions. Everyone in our group stayed safe and sound.

🇳🇿 Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley
One of the highlights of our visit to Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island was a trip to Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley is a geothermal wonderland known for its hot springs, geysers, and bubbling mud pools. It is part of the larger Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley and is home to the famous Pohutu Geyser, which can erupt up to 20 times a day, reaching heights of up to 30 meters.
The valley has a rich Māori history, with the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people having lived in the area for centuries. The village of Whakarewarewa itself is a living Māori village, where residents demonstrate traditional crafts, perform cultural ceremonies, and offer guided tours, providing visitors with a unique blend of geothermal and cultural experiences.
We also had the chance to try geothermal hāngi meals during our visit. Hāngi is a traditional Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven. The food is typically placed in baskets and wrapped in leaves or foil before being placed in the earth over the hot rocks.

Rafting in Rotorua: Wet, Wild, and Slightly Terrifying”
#2024mapped#rotorua
Rafting in Rotorua isn’t just an activity—it’s a full-blown adventure that soaks you in adrenaline, water, and questionable life decisions. The Kaituna River, with its infamous Tutea Falls—the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall at 7 meters—was our playground for the day.
It started harmlessly enough: a quick safety briefing and some overly optimistic paddling practice. Our guide, who was way too cheerful for someone about to launch us off a waterfall, promised it’d be “fun.” By fun, I think he meant “a near-death experience.”
The rapids got wilder, and soon we were laughing, screaming, and clinging to our paddles for dear life. Then came the big one—the 7-meter drop. “Hold on tight!” the guide yelled, which in rafting terms means, “Good luck staying in the boat.” We plunged, water exploding around us, and for a brief moment, I thought I’d made peace with the universe.
Miraculously, we surfaced intact—drenched, exhilarated, and laughing hysterically. Rafting in Rotorua isn’t for the faint-hearted, but if you’re looking for a mix of terror, joy, and one heck of a story to tell, it’s the perfect adventure. Just don’t forget to bring a change of clothes… or your dignity!
