Da 5 Bloods star Delroy Lindo will be officially joining Mahershala Ali in Marvel Studios’ Blade, per a breaking story earlier from The Hollywood Reporter. The film is being directed by Bassam Tariq, who helmed this year’s Mogul Mowgli starring Riz Ahmed, about an up-and-coming rapper battling a mystery illness.
Mahershala Ali was introduced as Eric Brooks/Blade in the post-credit scene of Chloé Zhao‘s Eternals, as the voice who addresses Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) when he’s about to wield the Ebony Blade. There are unconfirmed rumors that he will appear in next year’s Moon Knight alongside Oscar Isaac, potentially setting up the Midnight Sons property along the way, before making his appearance in his solo movie.
This won’t be Delroy Lindo’s first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he was cast in an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff called Marvel’s Most Wanted and even shot the pilot, but the series was axed by ABC before the pilot ever had the chance to air on TV. So now he’ll be starting fresh with Mahersha Ali in a brand-new role. But who will he be playing? He could very well be portraying Jamal Afari, Brooks’ mentor, but Marvel has not confirmed what role he will contribute in their latest adaptation of the popular comic series. In the 1998 film by Stephen Norrington starring Wesley Snipes as Brooks, Afari was reinterpreted as Abraham Whistler and was played by Kris Kristofferson.
The film is looking to start shooting in the Summer of 2022, with a potential late 2023 or early 2024 release date.
