Interview: Who Would You Give ‘The Power’?

A little power changes everything. That is the idea behind the new Prime Video series The Power based on the Naomi Alderman book of the same name. Set in modern times, the series explores the power shift that occurs when, without warning, all teenage girls in the world go through an evolutional change that gives them the ability to create electricity. Suddenly the abused, the ignored, the marginalized have the power in their hands, literally, in this thought-provoking look at the dynamics of shifting power.

Awards Radar recently had the opportunity to speak with the cast, producers, showrunner and author behind The Power about what makes this series so relevant in today’s world. The series goes well beyond the novelty of a superpower that allows young woman the power to electrocute. It puts society under the microscope as we observe how empowering young women affects them and forever changes the world in which they live.

We spoke with Alderman, series stars including Toni Collette, John Leguizamo, Auli’i Cravalho, Heather Agyepong & Toheeb Jimoh, showrunner Raelle Tucker, and producers Jane Featherstone, Naomi de Pear and Tim Bricknell. The questions across the interviews covered a range of topics from where the idea for The Power originated, the discussions the series will ignite, and why they wanted to be part of the series.

Each response clarified that this series has much more to say to and about today’s world than what you see on the surface. The more poignant responses came to the simplest question, “Who would you give this power to?” An array of answers covering from the very personal to the reflective to the humorous put into focus just how electrifying this concept can be.
