Barbados Assumes Presidency Of Latin American Energy Organization Barbados has assumed the presidency of the hemispheric body Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) at its meeting held in Asunción, Paraguay, this week. In accepting the role, Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins, thanked the regional membership for the confidence placed in Barbados and committed the hemispheric body to ensure that the unique and specific energy-transitioning issues facing the Caribbean were integrated fully into the work of the organisation with a president from that region in the Chair. In addition, Senator Cummins pointed out that “within OLADE, there are sub-regional nuances that need to be captured within clear, defined work programmes as we move forward. We have the continental agenda facing South America and Central America and then the island economies of the Caribbean. “There must be sub-regional agendas within OLADE that facilitate meaningful outcomes and genuine energy integration. Barbados has proposed that with a clear sub-regional agenda, partners like our development agencies and the business community can more come alongside us to give support that is tailored to our needs,” she stated. For the next year, Senator Cummins will Chair the Organisation and the Ministerial Council, while Deputy Permanent Secretary, Projects, Keisha Reid, will Chair the Council of Experts. This will allow Barbados to influence energy policy and sustainable development across Latin America and the Caribbean, aligning with its own goals of promoting renewable energy and climate resilience. The Latin American Energy Organization is an intergovernmental, public cooperation, coordination, and technical advisory body, launched on November 2, 1973, through the signing of the Lima Convention. It was ratified by 27 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, with the fundamental objective of promoting the integration, conservation, rational use, commercialisation, protection, and promotion of the energy resources of the region. OLADE is a significant contributor to the sustainable development and energy security of the region. Currently, its 27 member countries are – Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela. Bridgetown, Barbados – The Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) recently led a successful trade mission to Panama from October 16-21, 2024. The mission, which was organized in collaboration with PROPANAMA.GOB, Export Barbados (BIDC), Invest Barbados, the Embassy of Barbados in Panama, and Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., brought together a delegation of Barbadian businesses to explore new market opportunities, establish valuable partnerships, and gain first-hand insights into Panama's growing economy. During the mission, participants had access to exclusive business-to-business (B2B) meetings with Panamanian companies, site visits to critical trade hubs such as the Panama Canal, Panama Pacifico, and Colón Free Zones, and networking events with key industry leaders and stakeholders. The mission was tailored to foster mutually beneficial relationships across various sectors, including logistics and shipping, renewable energy, ICT and innovation, professional services, manufacturing, and more. The Ambassadors of both Barbados and Panama, H.E. Ian Walcott-Skinner and H.E. Xiomara Perez also accompanied the mission. “We are pleased with the success of this trade mission to Panama,” said Misha Lobban Clarke Lobban-Clarke, Executive Director of the BCCI. “This trade mission was strategically aimed at building mutually beneficial partnerships that will enhance business growth for Barbadian companies and contribute significantly to the broader economic development of Barbados. We were pleased that the members of the delegation were able to make valuable connections with Panamanian businesses and gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities in this growing market. We are confident that this mission will enhance bilateral relations and increase trade and investment between Barbados and Panama.” Ambassador Walcott-Skinner also added that “the Embassy and the Government of Barbados are very pleased with the outcomes so far, as we are fulfilling the Prime Minister’s mandate of commercial diplomacy connecting the hub of Panama to Barbados.” In addition to the organized business activities, the mission provided a deeper understanding of Panama's business environment, infrastructure, and investment opportunities. By facilitating direct interactions with industry experts and government officials, the mission enabled Barbadian businesses to better navigate the Panamanian market and explore avenues for trade and collaboration. Following the success of this mission, the BCCI plans to organize follow-up virtual meetings and further trade exchanges to solidify the partnerships established during this visit to ensure that Barbadian businesses can continue to maximize the opportunities and partnerships. The BCCI is committed to supporting the growth and development of Barbadian businesses. This trade mission is just one example of the many ways in which the BCCI is working to help Barbadian businesses succeed in the global marketplace.

Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados

It was a privilege to welcome back to the Governor’s Residence former Governor Dr. Marion Williams, former Deputy Governors Darcy Boyce and Dr. Daniel Boamah, and former Advisor to the Governor Peter Whitehall for this year’s third Forerunners Forum. We gathered for a Sip and Paint, with our masterpieces paying homage to the Central Bank’s builders—a fitting tribute to their legacy. Guided by the talented Paint & Groove Studio, we embraced our creative sides and honoured the leaders who paved the way for the Central Bank we know today. This quarterly event, which I established to honour past leaders of the Central Bank of Barbados, has now cemented itself as a space for reflection and camaraderie. For this particular event, the setting sun and symbolic imagery of deep roots provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of artistic expression. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to socialise with these incredible leaders and celebrate their lasting contributions to the Central Bank and Barbados. Their dedication and hard work have shaped both our institution and our nation. #ForerunnersForum #CentralBankBarbados #BarbadosNationBuilders
