🪸The 2nd EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum, convened by the Government of Grenada, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and the European Union, concluded with a renewed ambition to collect Sargassum before it reaches the shores to develop sustainable value chains. 🦑 In a High-Level Forum co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Grenada, Hon. Dickon Mitchell, the Director General of the OECS, Dr. Didacus Jules, and the Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the European Commission, Mr. Felix Fernandez-Shaw, representatives of countries from the Caribbean basin underscored the need for urgent collective action to turn Sargassum into an economic opportunity. This includes catalysing research and innovation in a common space, promoting public-private partnerships, and enhancing predictability and forecasting on the availability of Sargassum supply. A sargassum powered future is HERE! This electric vehicle is powered by sargassum, rum waste and sheep manure! The gas emitted when these materials break down is used in one of two ways: 1 - For an electric car, the gas produced is used to power a generator that charges the vehicle, OR 2 – For a gas powered car, the gas produced is fed into a standard Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) kit and provides the necessary fuel. As we gear up for the last day of 2nd EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum, it is clear that the problem of sargassum has unlimited potential to become a phenomenal asset in the region. Stream Day 2 https://lnkd.in/eaqR7QUD and be part of the conversations as we continue to turn the tide on sargassum! TRINBAGONIAN scientist Dr Legena Henry, pursued her studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, where the motto “Mens et Manus”—”Mind and Hand”—reflects the belief that education should be rooted in practical application. “The MIT campus is built on the spirit of yes, we have minds, but we have minds to solve the problems of humanity. So I feel I have learned to take science and apply it to real-world challenges,” Henry told Express Business. Driven by this philosophy, Henry launched the world’s first vehicle powered by renewable natural gas, derived from a blend of sargassum seaweed and rum distillery wastewater, tackling several global challenges at once.

🌿⚡️ Some of you asked: *"How did we power an electric car with Sargassum seaweed?"* Well, here’s the scoop: we took Sargassum seaweed and wastewater from rum distilleries to create biomethane (basically natural gas). We stored that biomethane in a propane tank and used it to fuel a dual-fuel generator, which slow-charged our EV. Pretty cool, right? 🌱🔋 But that’s not all! We also showed off Kirstin's upgraded Suzuki Jimny, which is set to run on our renewable natural gas (RNG) during the 4-car pilot – making the switch from petrol to renewable energy. 🚗✨ Big things are coming for clean, sustainable transport! Stay tuned! #Sargassum #Biogas #Rum #SustainableEnergy #EVCharging #GreenTech #CleanDriving #InnovationInAction
