Every day, 230 tons of untreated fecal waste pollutes Bangladesh’s open water bodies—posing a severe risk to public health and the environment. UNICEF and WaterAid are calling for urgent action to strengthen urban sanitation systems and ensure safe fecal sludge management. Without sustainable solutions, millions remain vulnerable to waterborne diseases, and children bear the greatest burden. 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gjsWSZJB

Australia’s most decorated Olympian and UNICEF Australia Ambassador, Emma McKeon, recently visited Bangladesh to witness how UNICEF programmes are helping children survive, learn, and thrive in some of the country’s most vulnerable communities. From flood-prone villages to bustling urban slums, Emma saw the profound impact of simple, community-driven interventions—and the extraordinary resilience of children determined to build brighter futures. Here’s what she experienced: 🏊♀️ Lifesaving Skills in Gazipur In Gazipur, Emma met children learning to swim through UNICEF’s SwimSafe programme—a life-saving skill in a country where 40 children drown every day. For many children in these flood-prone areas, swimming isn’t just a skill—it’s a lifeline. 🌊 Breaking Barriers in Cox’s Bazar She visited a local surfing camp where adolescent girls are not only learning to ride the waves but also challenging gender stereotypes. Through sports, these girls are building confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of possibility beyond traditional norms. 🌱 Rebuilding After the Floods in Feni In flood-hit Feni, Emma met families who lost everything overnight—homes, livelihoods, and the sense of normalcy. She saw how UNICEF is helping these communities rebuild by restoring classrooms and health clinics, and installing climate-resilient water systems to protect children’s health. 🛖 Hope in the Rohingya Refugee Camps In the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Emma met girls attending UNICEF-supported learning centers. Despite the uncertainty they live with, these girls shared their dreams for the future—dreams fueled by the opportunity to learn, play, and be safe. 🏙️ Empowerment in Dhaka’s Korail Slum In one of Dhaka’s largest informal settlements, Emma joined girls in sports activities and discussions on child protection and early marriage. She saw firsthand how these safe spaces are helping girls stay in school, build friendships, and advocate for their rights. Reflecting on her visit, Emma said: "It definitely makes you more grateful for what we have, but it makes me even more passionate to be able to help these children." Emma has now launched a fundraiser to support UNICEF’s efforts to provide more children with access to safe water, education, and swimming lessons. 📲 Read more about Emma’s journey and support her fundraiser here: https://lnkd.in/gqKZN3zv w/ UNICEF Australia

Today UNICEF and icddr,b shared breakthrough findings on “Sharnali” – a locally developed Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) for treating severe acute malnutrition in children thanks to Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada support. Nurjahan Begum, Adviser for Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh, and Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, were present at the event. Sharnali—made from rice, lentil, chickpea, milk powder, sugar, and oil—has shown promising results in addressing SAM. “This is not just about the health of children—good nutrition fuels brain development that leads to higher educational achievements, key for future economic growth,” said Rana. Together with our partners, we will continue our work to ensure every child gets the nutrition they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
