View profile for Liliane Umubyeyi, PhD, graphic

Co-founder & Executive Director of the African Futures Lab

Last week, I had the Honor of being the keynote speaker at the Global Europe on Trial conference, hosted by the Centre of Excellence in Law, Identity, and the European Narratives at University of Helsinki. It was an inspiring opportunity to share my perspective on the urgent need for justice and reparation in addressing the global system of racial inequality. I argued that dismantling this system alone is not enough; without true justice and reparations, we risk recreating hollow democratic systems that perpetuate the same cycles of violence and inequality under a new guise, as it happened at the time of decolonization 70 years ago.

  • 🇧🇪Belgium convicted of crimes against humanity for acts committed during colonization ⚖️ In a landmark decision, the Brussels Court of Appeal ruled that the abduction of mixed-race children in DRC, orchestrated by the Belgian state during its colonial administration, constitutes a crime against humanity. This decision is a significant milestone in the long-standing struggle for justice led by the victims of these practices. For over 70 years, individuals and families affected by these abductions have campaigned for recognition of their suffering and the broader systemic injustices inflicted during colonial rule. Today’s ruling is a significant acknowledgment of their experiences and an important step toward accountability. 🌎 In collaboration with civil society organizations based in DRC ( Association des Enfants Belges Laissés au Congo - AEBLC), Burundi ( Association des Métis des Grands Lacs - AMGL) and Belgium (Collectif Métis), African Futures Lab has been advocating for justice and reparation for the mothers and children who were victims of this abduction practice organised by the Belgian state in the three former colonies.
