🌿♻️ 🌍 Guimarães won the European Green Capital prize and Águeda won, along with Vaasa, in Finland, the European Green Leaf award, as announced by the European Commission during the 2026 European Green Cities Awards. 🟢 The 2026 European Green Capital winner was awarded to Guimarães based on its commitment to achieving continuous improvement regarding all #sustainable challenges and developments, as well as realising comprehensive results in all seven #environmental management areas. The jury recognised that Guimarães has successfully made sustainability part of its culture, with support available across the whole community, including to citizens, academia, and the private sector. 🟩 Águeda was praised for its comprehensive and structured approach to #sustainability, with numerous inspiring measures for all environmental areas. Its extensive communication and participatory strategy is supported by online dashboards available to the whole community. The jury also recognised #art and #culture as powerful driving forces behind the sustainable transition. As a Green Leaf winner, the city can count on its local “Green Ambassadors” and is well-connected, which enables it to help other cities in #Portugal and Europe. Agueda has a ‘Climate Action Plan’ with the ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2050 compared to 2005. The ‘BeAgueda’ project integrates a shared-use e-bicycle system to improve transport efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and promote healthy lifestyles. On November 21, in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw (Flanders), AICEP Belgium participated in the seminar "Find Your Place in Portugal – Your Journey Starts Here!”, organized by the Brussels’ Representative Office of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD). This event focused on showcasing and promoting residential tourism and real estate opportunities and strengthening trade and economic relations between Portugal and Belgium. The event started with an opening ceremony by the Ambassador of Portugal to Belgium, Jorge Cabral, followed by presentations from: Nuno Martins, Executive Board Member of Caixa Geral de Depósitos; Rui Paulo Almas, Director of AICEP BENELUX, Susana Cardoso, Director of Visit Portugal for the Netherlands and Belgium, Pedro Fontainhas, Managing Director of Portugal’s Residencial Tourism and Resorts Associations and Renata Silva Alves, representative of Legal Latin Advisors. The panel discussion that followed, moderated by Paulo Dentinho, RTP’s Correspondent in Brussels, was enriched by representatives of the regional governments of Madeira and Azores in Brussels, Kathleen Figueiredo Laissy and João Lança, respectively, the President of the Belgian-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, Rui Faria da Cunha, and the President of the CCINP - Chamber of Commerce and Industry NL-PT, Marisa🦋 Monteiro Borsboom, that provided valuable remarks on how to foster economic partnerships, investment and bilateral trade. A special thank you to Sofia Fernandes Carvalho, Head of CGD’s Brussels Representative Office, for the invitation and for organizing this fruitful and insightful discussion about the potential of Portuguese real estate and residential market for Belgian and Dutch investors. 🚀 The European Investment Fund (EIF) announced an investment of €90 million in three leading Portuguese venture capital funds: Armilar Venture Partners IV, Faber Tech III, and 33N Ventures Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Software Fund. This significant funding aims to drive over €400 million into Europe’s startup ecosystem, particularly in high-impact sectors like AI, cybersecurity, and machine learning. At the Web Summit, in Lisbon, on November 12, EIF’s CEO, Marjut Falkstedt, highlighted that these funds will accelerate the expansion of innovative European startups, emphasizing that venture capital managers are the “agents of change” guiding which technologies and innovations will shape our future. Notably, while Armilar and Faber continue their long-standing collaboration with the EIF, 33N joins as a new partner, also supported by Luxembourg’s Futures Fund. The European Commission has revealed the winners of the 2024-25 European Capital of Innovation Awards (#iCapital), celebrating a decade of recognising cities that lead the way in delivering #innovative solutions for their citizens. This year's top prizes, funded under the EU research and innovation programme Horizon Europe, were awarded to the cities of Braga and Torino. According to the European Commission, #Braga has developed a range of innovative solutions, from tech-based clusters to cultural and creative industries, and established a strong innovation #ecosystem with a focus on #collaboration and #inclusivity.  The award ceremony took place on 13 November 2024 in Lisbon at the Web Summit, one of the world's largest technology events. Commissioner Iliana Ivanova handed the awards to cities that have embedded innovation into daily urban life, advancing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient communities. The ceremony brought together the mayors from winning cities and past iCapital winners.  Braga won the award in the European Rising Innovative City category, while Torino won in the European Capital of Innovation category.
