    Helping businesses to embrace sustainability

What better way to conclude the first working year of the Vlerick Sustainability Centre than a company visit at one of our industrial jewels and a key player in the sustainability transition of our economy: ArcelorMittal in Ghent. The insights provided by Christophe Vandekerckhove connected with the different topics we worked on during the past year: decarbonisation, double materiality, reporting & target setting and a couple of topics on the radar for next year such as circularity and social themes. Two key takeaways stick with me: 🏭 Truly impressive to learn about and see the Steelanol and Torero installations, 2 pioneering, bio-based, state-of-the-art decarbonization initiatives within the context of steel making and important steps forward. ♻️ Steel = a fabric of life, we can’t do without, but its production requests a lot of energy. The good news is that steel is endlessly recyclable, so circularity, together with innovation and decarbonisatioin of the production process are the way forward. Steel making truly became high tech in Ghent! Thanks again to Christophe Vandekerckhove, Jürgen Spanhove and ArcelorMittal Ghent for hosting us! #sustainability #vlerick #taketheleap

  • Milestone: first shipment of #ethanol! 🎉🚢 The first delivery of ethanol via barge to our customers is a fact. ✅ Thanks to the greatly increased production capacity of our Steelanol plant, we no longer transport via trucks, but have been able to switch to barge shipping. 🌍💪 The first cargo of 500 tonnes, loaded at the Rodenhuizedok, is destined for LanzaTech for further processing into perfume and personal care products. 🧴 This is an important step in our sustainable strategy. 🌱 A big thank you to the teams who made this happen! 👏 #Steelanol #Sustainability #Innovation #LanzaTech

♻️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 "𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴" 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀? Yesterday, we had the pleasure of gathering about 40 members at ArcelorMittal Belgium for a compelling #DecarbSession on #Reducing, #Reusing, #Recycling in the supply chain - or how to minimize carbon emissions through smarter material use and closed-loop systems. 🌍 What a field trip it was! We went home with new insights about 💡𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: Recognizing the value of co-engineering to decarbonise throughout value chains, this particular case – where VELUX partners with Arcellor Mittal to lower the embedded CO2 in steel used by up to 70% – is a particularly inspiring one. 💡𝗖𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Knowing that construction sector accounts for 37% of global carbon emissions and represents the largest waste stream, Embuild Vlaanderen strategizes around the building blocks of building less, more clever and efficiently – with an obvious emphasis on reusing and recycling of building materials. 💡 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲: The push for sustainable materials is fuelled by increasing regulation and growing demand for low-carbon solutions among customers. With XCarb, ArcelorMittal implements circular economy principles to tackle their production-related carbon footprint. (https://lnkd.in/eBfu_n-g) A big thank you to 🙏 Caroline Deiteren (Embuild Vlaanderen) for shedding light on the challenges and opportunities in circularity within the construction sector. 🙏 Sabine Pauquay (VELUX) for insightful case studies on circularity, and for demonstrating the value of partnerships. 🙏 Hein Vandeveire and Frederik Leus (ArcelorMittal Belgium), for the warm welcome and for sharing their vision on reducing emissions with XCarb steel. "In 10 years from now, using recycled materials will not be an option. It will be a requirement. The key is to start now." 👉 Do you need some encouragement to decarbonise your supply chain? ArcelorMittal welcomed a number of high-profile guests to its steel plant in Gent, Belgium today.    Hosted by ArcelorMittal Europe CEO Geert Van Poelvoorde, we discussed the state of the steel industry in Europe with Mrs Teresa Ribera, the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition and Mr Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy. We were also delighted to welcome the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele, the Mayor of Gent Mathias De Clercq, Alderman Sofie Bracke and a number of other guests.    Together with other steelmakers in Europe, in recent months we have spoken out on a number of issues that are profoundly affecting our ability to competitively produce steel in Europe today: a record high in steel imports, driven by significant global overcapacity and weak trade defence; high energy costs; and climate policy that does not currently provide the level playing field we need, at a time when we need to invest significant capital to decarbonise our steelmaking assets.    We would like to thank the Commissioners for coming to listen to us today. Putting the steel sector on their agendas for the first week in their new role is a positive sign and we hope that that this is the start of impactful change that will give us the sustainable future that we want for our European operations.
