🌍 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗙𝗔𝗦 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗔 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌿   ARCHE Consulting (Hadewijch Vanhooren and Marnix Vangheluwe), in collaboration with VITO, has contributed to the development of new PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) threshold values for air and deposition, now officially published by the Flemish government. These updated values are crucial for protecting public health and the environment from the harmful effects of PFAS contamination.   📊 Key Highlights: - 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀: The study refines the threshold for PFAS in air, introducing new values for 5 additional PFAS compounds. The sum of the 4 EFSA PFAS has been lowered to 0.3 ng/m³, offering a safer and more protective standard, especially for children. - 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀: For the first time, threshold values for PFAS deposition have been introduced, guiding how much PFAS may deposit on the soil per square meter per day. These values are essential for managing long-term contamination in soil and groundwater.    💡 Why is this important? With PFAS being persistent in the environment, preventing additional deposition is key to avoiding future contamination of groundwater and soil. 🔬 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗛 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 🌱 Understanding how pH affects metal toxicity to sensitive organism like daphnids is crucial for assessing the environmental risks of contaminants like copper in freshwater ecosystems. In this study, our Charlotte Nys and Karel Viaene collaborated with Karel De Schamphelaere, to investigate how pH impacts 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 in two clones of Ceriodaphnia dubia within their natural pH niche (pH 6.5–8.5). 🔑𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: • No significant differences between the two clones in terms of pH-related toxicity effect. • A 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 as pH increased from 6.5 to 8.5. • A newly developed 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝘂 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 for C. dubia that accurately captured this pH effect and predicted copper toxicity in both controlled and natural water conditions. • A consistent predictive capability of our C. dubia model with other established models, such as the chronic Cu invertebrate model.
