Access to affordable cancer medication shouldn’t depend on where you live. Sadly, it often does. 💰 Treating cancer is impossible without access to quality medication and care. However, novel medicines can be extremely expensive, leaving some countries unable to afford them. 🚨 This has created major inequalities across Europe. In countries with comparatively low purchasing power or lower GDP, like Romania or the Baltic states, cancer patients are faced with limited access to innovative medication. No single country can confront this challenge on its own. This week, EU health ministers discussed two important topics to tackle this issue: 👉 A position paper, drafted by 7 EU member states, on voluntary joint procurement to help achieve lower prices and make small markets attractive for pharma industry. 👉 Progress made by the EU Council on the reform of the EU’s pharmaceutical legislation – a historical opportunity to make Europe’s pharmaceutical system more patient-centered. A new report from the OECD - OCDE shows that stronger policy action is needed to reduce the high burden of cancer on health, the economy and society. 💰 The OECD estimates that cancer costs about 449 billion euros per year in countries they studied, increasing health expenditure by 6% relative to a situation where there is no cancer. 📈 What’s more, cancer costs are set to rise significantly due to an aging population, longer survival rates requiring extended treatment, and higher treatment costs. 👉 But there’s hope! As around 40% of cancer cases can be prevented by healthier lifestyles, scaling up action to tackle tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity and air pollution would significantly curb the growing burden of cancer. Tomorrow, EU health ministers have an important opportunity for cancer prevention by voting on new EU Council recommendations on e-cigarettes and other novel and emerging nicotine and tobacco products in public places. 🚭 Various nicotine and tobacco products, like e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, have emerged as alternatives to conventional cigarettes in recent years and have become especially popular among young people. ⚠️ While research on the long-term health impacts of such products is underway, evidence shows that they can lead to the use of other tobacco products through what is known as the ‘gateway effect’. 👉 Although the Council Recommendation, if adopted, will not legally binding, it would still act as an important tool to better protect people from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine products. We’re calling on all EU governments to support the draft Council Recommendation! Projects funded by the EU4Health programme are instrumental to achieving the EU’s goals on cancer prevention and care 🎗️ Earlier this month, we had the great pleasure of presenting one of such projects, #BUMPER, at the European Public Health EPH Conference in Lisbon. At a special session organised by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA), our own Helena Ros Comesaña shared best practices from BUMPER, a project dedicated to supporting the development of a special mobile app for cancer prevention. Couldn’t join us in Lisbon? You wouldn’t invite a fox to a chicken coop... So why let health-harming industries influence public health decisions? 🦊 🚫 Tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food and beverage companies have a clear conflict of interest and should not be allowed to shape policies that affect our health. ⚠️ Every year, four products—tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy foods and beverages, and fossil fuels—cause 2.7 million deaths in Europe, including from cancer. This is equivalent to losing the entire population of Lithuania annually. EU and national policymakers need to put public health first. Cancer remains to be one of the greatest economic, social and health challenges Europe faces today, with a new cancer diagnosis taking place every nine seconds. Speaking at a special panel during the #EuropeanCancerSummit, our President Ramon Reyes highlighted three areas where the EU Cancer Plan still has room for improvement. 🚨 Tobacco is the single most important risk factor for cancer, responsible for over 30% of cases in Europe. But much more needs to be done to achieve the first tobacco-free generation. 🚨 Many novel cancer treatments and medication are extremely expensive. Acting as a single buyer would allow the EU to bring its market power of 500 million citizens to the negotiation table and lower prices. 🚨 To improve cancer care, we need to better understand the gaps across EU member states. A European Cancer Inequalities Registry can help highlight those areas that need to be strengthened. Together, we must keep doing everything we can to keep cancer care and prevention on top of the European political agenda. Read our demands to intensify the fight against cancer: https://lnkd.in/ewVjp9J7 A big thanks to the European Cancer Organisation for a great event!
