About us

The architectural practice Barbara Van der Wee Architects is specialized in restoration, adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of valuable historic buildings built in the 19th and the 20th century, listed monuments and sites, as well as UNESCO world heritage. The practice is situated in the heart of Brussels and has 30 years of experience in collaboration with different players in the field of the conservation of monuments and sites in the Brussels-Capital Region, in Flanders and Wallonia. The main philosophy of the practice consists of the integration of the reflections on heritage in the design process from the very beginning of each restoration and rehabilitation project. As such, a balance can be achieved between the various inputs from the different parties of the team. Interdisciplinary research, including detailed research on the construction history of a building or site, precedes every restoration study. For the team of Barbara Van der Wee Architects, the preservation of the authenticity of the building and the integration of contemporary interventions and techniques form an integral part of the design process.
