Diese Woche waren unsere #Fraunhofer FFB-Mitarbeitenden gleich auf mehreren Veranstaltungen im Bereich der #Batterietechnologie unterwegs – den Battery Innovation Days 2024, dem Technology Brokerage Event der BEPA - Batteries European Partnership Association in Barcelona sowie der International BatteryProduction Conference (IBPC) 2024 in Braunschweig. 🌍 📍𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 Wir blicken auf zwei spannende Tage bei den Battery Innovation Days zurück, in denen Endverbraucher sowie Expertinnen und Experten aus Forschung, Politik und Industrie über die neuesten Technologien in den Bereichen #Batteriematerialien, #Zellendesign, #Fertigung und #Recycling diskutierten, um die europäische Batteriezellforschung und -innovation zu fördern. Auch unser Team der #FraunhoferFFB war mit Dr.-Ing. I was very sorry to miss the Battery Innovation Days 2024 this year here in Barcelona. At least I made it to come for the BEPA - Batteries European Partnership Association General Assembly the day after. For what I hear, I missed interesting discussions and points of view on how should Europe catch up with other countries and develop a indigenous battery manufacturing industry. Many uncertainities about the most efficient way to achieve this target. One of the points mentioned was about not to overexpect to be able to develop in 3-4-5 years a entire new industry that took 1-2 even 3 decades to grow elsewhere. And some certainities as well: we will need to continue to promote research and development Europe. It will not be sufficient, but will be essential. As simple as it is, this is a strong statement to say it loud. And from a more personal side, I was reelected to continue as one of the three representatives of the Research community at the BEPA Association Delegation, together with Kristina Edström and Victor Trapp - congratulations to you all and a big thank you to the other candidates and the whole BEPA community. The battery world might not be grinning broadly at the moment, but the Battery Innovation Days 2024 in Barcelona brought back questions, ideas, and hopes that we must address without delay. The challenges are significant, but the event provided a vital moment for reflection on what Europe needs to do to progress. A sincere thank you to ACCIÓ for hosting, with special appreciation to Riánsares López and Tomás Megía for their support. RISE at Battery Innovation Days 2024 – Driving Collaboration for the Battery Sector 🍃 Back home from excellent days in Barcelona, we are filled with inspiration and renewed energy. We sincerely thank BEPA - Batteries European Partnership Association for hosting such a well-organised event. RISE Research Institutes of Sweden participated in Session 2.3: Machinery matters – addressing challenges in manufacturing equipment. Here, our colleague Anwar Ahniyaz was part of the panel discussion to address the pressing challenges in manufacturing equipment for batteries. “We discussed the importance of European battery manufacturing equipment, emphasizing the need for action to enhance collaboration between cell manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, and academia. We also highlighted the importance of increasing the R&D budget for cell manufacturing equipment and training next-generation engineers,” says Anwar Ahinyaz, senior researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. During the session, Anwar represented #BatteryHeroes, a cluster launched in January 2023 by the Horizon Europe project NoVOC. The cluster brings together battery development projects to advance sustainable technologies across the EU. It was great to spend two days discussing the future of Batteries in Europe at Battery Innovation Days. There was sobering news, but also points to provide hope and messages of determination to succeed! I was lucky to be able to make a presentation entitled Recycling Processes for design-to-cost technologies: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future. One take home message, "Design for Circularity" for future batteries can and will facilitate direct recycling, and has the potent to be a USP for the European battery industry. It was great to meet up with lots of current and former project partners, sister projects and friends!
