🤝 How can we encourage cooperation for collective climate action? 🌱 🇮🇪 The latest report from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland, “Encouraging Cooperation in Climate Collective Action Problems”, explores how behavioural science can help us tackle one of the biggest challenges in climate action: aligning individual efforts with collective goals. ⚡️Our everyday choices—how we travel, eat, and use energy—affect not only the climate but also everyone else's ability to enjoy a liveable world. Yet, a mismatch between personal and collective interests often stalls progress. 👉 For example: If others reduce their emissions, it's tempting to "free-ride" and not make changes ourselves. Conversely, if others don’t act, it feels futile to act alone. 🧠 This is the climate collective action problem. 👍 The good news? Most people are “conditional cooperators”—willing to make personal sacrifices if they trust others will too. 👎 The bad news? This cooperation is fragile, varies across contexts, and isn’t universal. Key insights from the report: ✅ Cooperation thrives when people... > Understand that it benefits everyone. > Feel the "ask" is fair. > See leaders setting an example. > Observe consequences for those who don’t act. 🔄 ...But there are unique challenges: > Climate action spans local, national, and global levels. > People often feel uncertain about which actions matter. > The greatest consequences will affect future generations. > We are naturally biased towards maintaining the status quo. ➡️ This report provides a roadmap for fostering trust and cooperation to overcome these barriers. Check it out to explore actionable insights. 🔗 Full report linked in comments. 🙌 Thanks to Shane Timmons for sharing this research. #sustainability #behaviouralscience #behavioralscience #climateaction #collaboration Una Morrison 🇮🇪Louise Ward James Green David McNair Mira Toumi Julia Terlet Fred Dorsimont Mariana Malta Cruz

🧠 Last Thursday and Friday, during the Sustainable Behaviour Hackathon semi-finals and finals, EDHEC Business School students presented their recommendations for encouraging sustainable consumption choices, using some of Behaven’s tools and methods. ♻️ For Versuni (formerly Philips Domestic Appliances), they explored how behavioural science can inspire customers to choose Philips refurbished products over new ones — promoting a more sustainable approach to product consumption. 💡The student teams shared ideas spanning communications, digital, point-of-sale, and branding. They also had the opportunity to present their work to Versuni's marketing and sustainability teams, while gaining insights into the company’s sustainable product and packaging design initiatives. 👏 A big THANK YOU to Versuni for this fantastic collaboration, enabling students to apply behavioural science in crafting impactful marketing strategies and empowering consumers to make informed, conscious choices throughout their shopping journey. #hackathon #sustainability #behaviouralscience #behavioralscience #marketing Malva Groothuis - Verbeek Louise Widmark Julija Chlopenova Guergana Guintcheva Vanina GAIMARD Natalia Huszcza Julia Terlet Mira Toumi Fred Dorsimont

💡 The hackathon is in full swing, with students presenting their pitches to the client teams this afternoon. For NESPRESSO, they have been working on addressing two key challenges, specifically applying behavioural science to improve waste-sorting practices: 1️⃣ How can we encourage Dutch customers to compost their paper-based coffee capsules at home? 2️⃣ How can we encourage Dutch customers to recycle their aluminium coffee capsules? 🧠 Students are applying behavioural insights and creative approaches to influence sustainable actions in everyday life. 👏 A big thank you to Nespresso for their dedication to innovation and sustainability! #hackathon #sustainability #behaviouralscience #behavioralscience Reineke van Riemsdijk Mira Toumi Vanina GAIMARD Guergana Guintcheva Natalia Huszcza Fred Dorsimont Julia Terlet

🧠 For the past few years, we have been collaborating with the UK Science and Innovation Network in Europe to examine climate challenges through the lens of behavioural science. 🥙 Our latest 'Behaviours for Net Zero' Roundtable focused on the food system, specifically exploring how ecolabels can encourage more sustainable food choices. We brought together a fantastic group of experts, scientists, policymakers, and NGOs, generating some truly valuable insights. ➡️ You can read a short roundup of this Roundtable in a blog post by Kate Robinson — link in comments! 📣 A new behaviourally informed communications strategy for the University of Lorraine! 👏 We’re excited to announce the completion of our first project with Universite de Lorraine, where we developed a behaviourally informed communications strategy for their Ecological Transition mission. 👊 This strategy aims to actively engage the entire university community — students, staff and faculty — in taking concrete actions toward sustainable practices across campus. 🧠 Following an in-depth study, we designed a strategy grounded in behavioural science to help the university take its commitment to the next level by bridging the gap between intention and action. We covered key areas like responsible digital practices, sustainable mobility, and biodiversity preservation. 😊 In response to rising eco-anxiety, especially among young people, this strategy adopts a positive, action-oriented approach, building confidence in each person’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the ecological transition. 🤝 This project sets a strong foundation for driving real change within the university. A big thank you to Laure-Elise Briois, François Peiller, Florence Damour, David DINE, and Guillain Mauviel for a productive and enjoyable collaboration! ➡️ Interested in learning how behavioural science can drive sustainable change within your organisation?
