To promote cardiovascular research, education, and care of patients with cardiovascular disease in Belgium
About us
The BELGIAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOLOGY is a scientific society of Belgian cardiologists, promoting research and education in the field of cardiology. The main aims of the BSC are to stimulate the study of questions relating to the cardiovascular system, by furthering basic and clinical research; to ensure a wide dissemination of the results of such research; to encourage scientific exchanges and cooperation between cardiologists; to promote continuous education in cardiology; and to promote international cooperation. The organisation supports the activities of several working groups The working groups organise meetings and courses throughout the year, in each of their specialities. Valvular heart disease (VHD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH) are significant cardiovascular disorders with distinct yet sometimes overlapping pathophysiologies. VHD results from structural or functional valve abnormalities caused by degenerative processes, rheumatic disease, congenital defects, or endocarditis, leading to altered hemodynamics and heart failure. PH, defined as a mean pulmonary arterial pressure ≥20 mmHg, arises from diverse causes, including left heart disease, chronic lung disease, or idiopathic mechanisms, and can occur independently or secondary to VHD. Advances in diagnostics, including echocardiography and pulmonary hemodynamic indices like the pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPi), have enhanced the assessment and stratification of both conditions. Innovative therapies for PH, such as sotatercept, target vascular remodelling and complement expanding interventional options for VHD. A thorough understanding of these conditions’ interplay is essential to optimising management and improving outcomes in these complex cardiovascular disorders. 👉 Continue reading https://lnkd.in/eXg8Dk5Y An editorial from Patrizio Lancellotti & Raluca Dulgheru 👇 ACTA subscription is included in the BSC membership 🤗 Not yet a member? Heart failure (HF) continues to represent a pivotal focus in cardiology research and innovation due to its multifaceted pathophysiology and its association with substantial morbidity and mortality. Recent progress in HF management encompasses advancements in pharmacotherapy, the integration of state-of-the-art technologies, and the identification of novel biomarkers, all of which are transforming clinical practice. Additionally, ongoing research efforts are delving into strategies for early diagnosis, the application of personalised medicine, and the development of more effective therapeutic interventions aimed at improving clinical outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for patients with HF. 👉 Continue reading https://lnkd.in/ePHeFaKB An editorial from Patrizio Lancellotti & Arnaud ANCION 👇 ACTA subscription is included in the BSC membership 🤗 Not yet a member? 🎉Huge milestone! The EU has adopted Council conclusions on the improvement of cardiovascular health 🎉 This includes strengthening primary and secondary prevention, early detection and screening, and optimising management and rehabilitative care of CVD. The Council conclusions also call on the European Commission to ensure adequate funding and to map cardiovascular health actions in an integrated way, through primary, secondary and tertiary care. Proposed steps include promoting evidence-based prevention measures, advancing innovative treatments, and leveraging digital health tools for better data integration and research. These actions aim to reduce risk factors common to both cardiovascular diseases and cancer, such as poor nutrition, tobacco use, and physical inactivity.
