  • It was an absolute pleasure working with Mike and the team at John Sisk & Son Ltd as well as Simon and the team at Network Rail on the Kingsferry Bridge rope replacement project. To work on a project that consisted of over 20,000 total manhours without incidents or accidents is something the entire project team should be extremely proud of. We very much look forward to the next project. For any of your rope service requirements, please contact our Ropes360® team at ropes360@bekaert.com

Operations Manager at John Sisk & Son Ltd

Completion of the Kingsferry Bridge Rope Replacement project. At 14h15 on Saturday 3rd November, nearly 11 hours ahead of programme, Sisk Rail handed back the Kingsferry Bridge possession. This early handback brought the eight-day blockade, one of three eight-day blockades and two two day blockades, to a successful conclusion. It meant that all forty of the hoist and counter-weight ropes used to lift the centre deck of this unique and iconic structure had been safely and successfully completed without a single incident or accident. This remarkable achievement highlights the risk controls implemented to deal with the challenges of working in very confined spaces, working at height and working with outdated and noisy equipment over sixty years old. The journey to replace the ropes, last replaced in 1999, started three years ago. Regular Magnetic rope testing (MRT) to monitor the condition of the ropes was carried out and ultimately showed that some of the ropes had reached life expiry. This resulted in a collaborative solution between Network Rail, Sisk Rail, Bridons-Bekaert Ropes360 Services and the fantastic supply chain supporting Sisk Rail. Some interesting facts pertaining to the bridge include: - ·      📏 1.55km total length of ropes installed ·      🕛 >20,000 total number of manhours worked without incidents or accidents ·      💪 9,770kg total weight of discarded ropes, sent for cleaning and recycling ·      🚊 No possession overruns Special thanks must go to Network Rail’s Project Manager Simon Holman, and Sisk Rail’s Project Manager Neil Cleaveland, for their leadership through some challenging issues found during the works. Stakeholder management has played a vital key role to the successful completion of these works and Network Rail's Ross Boyle has led this aspect superbly. Finally, a special thanks to all our wonderful supply chain partners that have played a significant role in the success of this project, including ACS Projects, Amber Scaffolding, Bridons-Bekaert, CAN Limited, Cutlass Mechanical Engineering, Colman Rail Services, Flannery’s Plant, MacRail Systems, McNealy Brown, NCCT, NTS Premier Services, Sisk Engineering Services, TGP and TSM Limited. • Are your wire rope inspections meeting industry standards? Regular inspections are critical to maintaining safety and operational efficiency. Industry standards like ISO 4309 emphasize the importance of routine visual checks of the rope's working section to spot early signs of deterioration, as well as periodic in-depth inspections to detect broken wires, corrosion and other defects before they cause costly failures. Following industry standards not only ensures compliance but also extends your equipment’s lifespan and protects your workforce. Ropes 360® offers comprehensive inspection solutions, including visual, magnetic rope testing, ultrasonic methods, and advanced technologies like VisionTek (using computer vision) and drone inspections.   Contact us today at ropes360@bekaert.com to learn how you can maintain safety and efficiency.   #ropeinspection #magneticropetesting #visiontek #droneinspection #ropes360 #bridon #bekaert

  • On September 12th, 2024, Bekaert delivered a key presentation at the IMCA Lifting and Rigging Seminar in Amsterdam, led by Dr. Christoph Ruffing (Sector Technology Lead). Our discussion centered on the lifespan of wire ropes in the renewable installation sector, followed by a plenary session where we addressed audience questions. It was a great opportunity to share insights and engage with industry professionals! #Bekaert #Bridon #IMCA #WireRope
