💪✨ A strong and competitive economy is the foundation for Europe’s security. This was the central message from the EU business community to the incoming Polish EU Presidency during BusinessEurope’s Council of Presidents meeting in Warsaw. Hosted by our Polish member Konfederacja Lewiatan, the event brought together Presidents and Directors General from our member federations. Together, they discussed economic priorities with Polish leaders, including Andrzej Domański, CFA, Minister of Finance, Magdalena Sobkowiak, Undersecretary of State, and President Andrzej Duda. Sauli Niinistö, former President of Finland and special adviser to the President of the European Commission, presented his report on Europe’s civilian and military preparedness in a shifting global landscape. 📣 Our President Fredrik Persson emphasised: "To remain an anchor of peace, prosperity, and stability, Europe must act decisively to strengthen its economy and close the widening competitiveness gap with major global players." We urge the EU to prioritise ten key actions during the Polish Presidency, starting with: ✔️ Defining an ambitious Single Market strategy by mid-2025 ✔️ Proposing a new clean industrial deal to reduce regulatory burdens on companies, accelerate permitting, reduce energy costs, and address labour and skills shortages ✔️ Diversifying trade to boost resilience in an evolving geopolitical landscape 📜 Learn more in our #COPRES declaration: https://shorturl.at/lMjDB

I had the pleasure and privilege to meet with António Costa, President-elect of the Council of the European Union to discuss BusinessEurope ’s priorities for the new political cycle. All the legislative EU institutions in Brussels should be aware of the urgency to put in place policies that will improve the investment conditions in Europe. In light of the elections in USA, we also shared our expectations on the EU-US relations, emphasizing the critical importance of a strong transatlantic partnership. Additionally, we outlined BusinessEurope’s priorities on EU-India relations. Last but not least, as we are publishing today our paper on EU-China relations, I gave Mr Costa our main priorities regarding the future of this important economic relationship. Despite the challenges we want to build a positive agenda for engagement with China but China needs to be willing to seriously engage with the EU. You can find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/dRdjQm2n It was an excellent first exchange with president-elect Costa and we look forward to continuing the dialogue in the coming years, especially within the framework of the Tripartite Social Summit. This will be central in our joint effort to strengthening European competitiveness and to making the EU the place to do business, invest and innovate. #businesseurope #antoniocostas #eu

How can we at the same time create more jobs 👷 produce goods and services at better prices for consumers, and deliver on the green and digital transition? By supporting European companies and consumers with the right ⚖️ framework, as outlined in BusinessEurope's two latest papers. 📢 Our new paper: The EU must take a strategic, long-term, and unified approach to China China is the world’s 2nd-largest economy and the second-largest EU trading partner in goods. It will remain a crucial market for European companies. Yet, the growing risks and challenges of doing business in and with China cannot be ignored. How should the EU engage with China in a ever challenging geopolitical context? Our latest paper dives into the evolving #EUChina relationship, the increasing challenges, and propose a path forward. Key takeaways include: 🤝 China's market importance: building a mutually beneficial relationship should remain a core objective for both the EU and China. 📈 De-risking strategy: the EU must diversify, reduce vulnerabilities, and manage risks, especially in key sectors like critical raw materials. 💪 Boosting EU competitiveness: improving Europe’s economic resilience is key, as China now competes with Euro area exporters in nearly 40% of sectors, up from 25% in 2002. Prosperity and competitiveness must be Europe’s top priorities. 🇪🇺 Unified EU action: it is crucial that EU Member States act in unison when dealing with China. The EU’s approach should be strategic and long-term, moving beyond reactive, short-term responses. 🎥 Watch our Director General Markus J. Beyrer share insights on the paper, and find the full document here: https://shorturl.at/xzy5X

🔍 Call for expertise: Help shape smarter social regulation! 🔍 BusinessEurope is seeking external expertise to conduct a study on smart ways to address #social regulatory burdens from an employer’s perspective. With a grant from the European Commission's Social Dialogue budget line, this project aims to strengthen the link between social dialogue at both national and European levels. 📊 What’s involved? This study will tackle the data gap on social regulatory burdens, assess the real challenges employers face under EU social legislation, and highlight best practices for reducing excessive burdens. Additionally, it will compare “gold-plated” implementations to effective practices across member states. As Europe works to drive economic growth and enhance global competitiveness, establishing productive, innovation-friendly regulatory frameworks is essential. 📅 Project Timeline: The subcontractor will start in mid-December 2024, with the final report due by October 2026. 📥 How to Apply: Submit your technical and financial proposals (as two PDF documents) to submissions.socialaffairs@businesseurope.eu by 12:00 CET on 2 December 2024. For European companies to drive innovation and deliver breakthrough technologies, they need a legal framework that is truly fit for purpose. ⚙️ A key piece of the puzzle? A solid EU Intellectual Property #IP policy. The recent Draghi report points out a major EU’s challenge: translating innovation into commercial success, where intellectual property protection plays a pivotal role. Think of it like this—intangible assets such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights are often referred to as the currency of innovation. Without a clear and robust framework to protect these assets, companies can’t keep innovating, particularly in vital areas like the green and digital transitions. 🌱💻 What steps can we take to fully leverage IP policy and make Europe the go-to destination for investment?💡 Our Legal Affairs Director, Pedro Oliveira, and Senior Adviser, Elena Bertolotto, offer their insights. 🌍 What do European businesses expect from #COP29 in Azerbaijan? Businesses are crucial in the journey to climate neutrality. As an official observer of the UNFCCC process, BusinessEurope urges Parties to make progress on the following: 💰 Mobilising Capital for Climate Action We need an ambitious and achievable climate finance target beyond $100 billion, that supports the mobilisation of private capital. 🔄 Fully Operationalising Article 6 Carbon Markets We urge Parties to show flexibility and reach an agreement on the remaining key Article 6 issues. Article 6.4 decisions should respect environmental integrity while reducing barriers for private sector participation. 🌍 Raising Global Climate Ambition Parties should commit to stronger efforts and pave the way for ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) aligned with the Paris Agreement. 🌱 Enhancing Climate Resilience & Adaptation Adaptation efforts and measures to stimulate investments in resilience should be accelerated, avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy. Strong cooperation among businesses, authorities, and communities is key to building resilience. 📄 Read our full position paper: https://lnkd.in/eT7RDV-B

🔍 Are you an expert in EU skills policies and initiatives with a deep understanding of industry-specific challenges? Ready to make a real difference for employers across Europe? We are launching a call for #tender for sub-contracted expertise to carry out a study on access to skills from an employer’s perspective. Funded via the European Commission’s social dialogue budget line, this study aims to identify key challenges and effective solutions to tackle labour and #skillsshortages. Why this matters: Skills shortages are becoming more prevalent across Europe, with nearly two-thirds of SMEs reporting difficulty finding employees with the right skills (Eurobarometer). Our own 2023 survey confirmed that skills gaps are limiting growth and productivity across sectors. What we’re looking for: The subcontractor will: ➡ Analyse challenges and training barriers from the employer's perspective, with insights from outside the EU where relevant. ➡ Conduct consultations with stakeholders. ➡ Deliver a comprehensive final report with actionable insights. Timeline The project will commence in the second half of December 2024, with completion expected by October 2026. 🗓️ Submit your technical and financial proposals by 4 December 2024, 12:00 CET 📩 Proposals to be sent to: submissions.socialaffairs@businesseurope.eu For full details on the eligibility criteria and the scope of tasks, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gAB8-EDE
