🔗 Connected regional innovation #ecosystems are the key for Europe’s #competitiveness – this message guided yesterday’s ERRIN high-level event with participation of five Members of the European Parliament as discussions on the future Multiannual Financial Framework #MFF post-2027 are in full swing. Eszter Lakos (EPP), Christophe Clergeau (S&D) and Dario Nardella (S&D) from the ITRE Committee, joined the event alongside Janusz Lewandowski (EPP) and Rasmus Andresen (Greens) from the BUDG Committee. 🗣️In the debate elegantly moderated by Sarah English, ERRIN Co-Chair from Scotland Europa, messages from the MEPs were complemented by regional voices from #ERRINmembers Montse Daban Marín, Catalonia, Joanna Kubiak, Wielkopolska, Pieter Faber, Cities Northern Netherlands, Saara Nuotio-Coulon, Turku-Southwest Finland European Office and remarks from ERRIN Director Pirita Lindholm. 🔑 Key takeaways: 🔹The Draghi report has placed R&I at the heart of EU Policy Making. Competitiveness must be driven by #innovation. 🔹Europe’s weakness is its fragmented innovation ecosystem – also highlighted by #CompetitivenessCompass published today. As innovation happens in places, tackling this challenge requires mobilisation of cities and regions and their R&I ecosystems  🔹Strengthening connectivity between regional ecosystems will help boosting Europe’s competitiveness.  🔹Clear framework for support to regional R&I ecosystems in the next MFF is needed  🔹Achieving a more inclusive European R&I ecosystem and tackling the innovation gap remain a key challenge to be addressed  🔹Fostering collaboration between stronger and weaker ecosystems can help unlock the full innovation potential of Europe as a whole  🔹It is essential to provide concrete proposals in addition to key principles strong #cohesion policy, multi-level governance and #partnership principle  🔹Dare to dream – think “out of the box” when making proposals towards #FP10 or the next #MFF   🔹 A common goal and an ambitious collective strategy are necessary 👏 The success of this event was a collective effort of #ERRINmembers – thank you all for your tremendous work in making it happen! 🔵 Catalan Government Advocates for a More Decentralised Europe in Meetings with European Commissioners This week in Brussels, Lorena Elvira, Secretary General of the Ministry for European Union and Foreign Action, met with three European commissioners to advocate for a more decentralised and citizen-focused Europe. 📌 Key discussions took place with: 🔹 Roxana Minzatu, Executive Vice-President for Social Rights and Skills 🔹 Piotr Serafin, Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud, and Public Administration 🔹 Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms These meetings stemmed from the #EURegions4Cohesion alliance, representing 144 regions across 11 EU Member States, including Catalonia. The discussions highlighted the importance of regional participation in shaping European policies, particularly: ✅ Strengthening Cohesion Policy post-2027, ensuring continued EU investment to reduce regional disparities. ✅ Enhancing regional access to EU decision-making, reinforcing principles of partnership, multilevel governance, and subsidiarity. ✅ Modernising EU Structural and Investment Funds, advocating for a flexible and efficient monitoring system with strong regional involvement. 🌊 Catalonia calls for changes in the EU fishing regulation to adapt it to the needs of the Mediterranean 🌟 After 13 years, the Government of Catalonia has regained representation at the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH). Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food, Òscar Ordeig, announced that the Catalan fishing sector will now have permanent representation in Brussels. A dedicated team of fishermen, scientists from ICATMAR, and government experts will work together to ensure Mediterranean fisheries policies are tailored to local realities beyond 2025. 🌍 Catalan-led OpenEU takes the first steps toward Europe’s first open university 🎓 The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is leading the way with OpenEU, an ambitious initiative to create the first pan-European open university. Supported by the European Commission and a network of ten European universities, this alliance brings together 368,000+ students and 24,000 faculty members across the continent, addressing key challenges in lifelong learning, inclusion, and digital transformation. 📍 Highlights: Rectors from participating universities convened in Barcelona on January 16–17 to define the project’s strategic goals. Jaume Duch, Minister for European Union and Foreign Action, welcomed the initiative, while UOC Rector Àngels Fitó Bertran emphasized the importance of high-quality online education to widen access for those unable to attend traditional universities. 🌍 Catalonia's Priorities on the European Agenda Presented in Brussels 🇪🇺 Minister Jaume Duch Guillot began 2025 by placing Catalonia's interests at the forefront of the European Union’s priorities during a series of high-level meetings in Brussels. This marks his fifth visit as Minister for European Union and Foreign Action, with an agenda focused on fostering dialogue and collaboration. 🤝 Key Meeting Highlights: 🌟 Polish EU Presidency: Duch met with Agnieszka Bartol, Poland’s Permanent Representative to the EU, as Poland takes over the presidency of the EU Council. Discussions covered European funds, agricultural policy, and advancing Catalan as an official EU language. 🌊 Mediterranean Affairs: A meeting with Stefano Sannino, Secretary-General of the European External Action Service, focused on strengthening Mediterranean policies in the EU agenda and building on the legacy of the Barcelona Process. 👥 Youth and Civil Society Engagement: Oliver Röpke, President of the European Economic and Social Committee, shared a commitment to fostering greater youth and civil society participation in shaping the EU’s future, as well as supporting the inclusion of Catalan as an official EU language. 📢 Strengthening Catalonia’s Voice: Duch also met with European Parliament leaders, including Iratxe García-Pérez, Javi López, and Laura Ballarín Cereza, to align on legislative priorities and amplify Catalonia's voice in the European Union.
