Bart Wanten will defend his PhD on the 19th of December at 15:00. In his thesis, he focused on the combined conversion of CO2 and CH4 by means of a plasma reactor, specifically a confined atmospheric pressure glow discharge. An excellent performance was achieved in terms of conversion and energy cost. The product was a mixture of CO and H2, of which the value was improved after adding H2O to the reaction mixture. An improved environmental performance compared to the state-of-the-art was obtained, showing the potential of this plasma-driven process.

Yuman Qin will defend her PhD on the 22nd of November at 16:00. The urgent need for sustainable strategies is driving innovations to tackle global environmental challenges. Photoredox catalysis represents an energy-efficient and sustainable process that uses light to facilitate reactions. Her thesis explores the combined potential of photoredox catalysis and its application on plastic waste valorization, CO₂ capture, and sustainable oxidation processes, focusing on how these approaches can contribute to circular economy.

Peng Ren will defend his PhD on the 21st of November at 16:00. His PhD research focuses on developing advanced photocatalysts for sustainable chemical production and carbon capture applications. He explored novel photocatalytic methods for producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) directly from seawater and for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaust gases, using materials such as BiOBr-lignin composites, manganese single-atom catalysts, and iron-based photocatalysts. These catalysts enhance reaction efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. His work aims to address global challenges related to energy sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions through innovative photocatalytic strategies.

Joachim Slaets will defend his PhD today at 14:00. The dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a process that utilizes carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) to produce a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2), which can be used to further synthesize of a variety of chemicals and fuels. A highly reactive plasma environment can be used to break down these molecules. By leveraging such processes, CO2 can be transformed into useful chemicals, contributing to both emission reduction and resource circularity. His thesis studies the reaction mechanism of DRM through chemical kinetics modelling to gain a better understanding of the effects of different plasma conditions. Evaluating the influence of different parameters on the core kinetics in warm plasmas as well as the post-plasma reactions, while considering different gas compositions, such as CO2 and CH4 ratio and the influence of N2 in the mixture. The findings presented improve the understanding of plasma-based DRM technology, providing a basis for further studies and process optimization.
