🚨 Air quality is the biggest environmental threat to human health. But change is on the way. By 2030, European cities will have to implement new measures to improve air quality, and tackling air pollution from transport must be one of their first steps. A new alliance of businesses and NGOs from the transport sector, called the Transport Alliance for Clean Air (TACA), is committed to driving change for healthier, cleaner cities across the EU. TACA's new briefing, ‘Pathways to clean air in cities' looks at a range of approches to reduce emissions of air pollutants and transform urban mobility. rom simply ensuring all internal combustion engines vehicles meet the latest Euro standards, to reimagining urban transport to include car sharing and active transport, the results show there is a clear road ahead to a less polluted future.

  • 🚚 Can London lead the way on zero-emission freight? Last week, we hosted Pathways to Zero Emission Freight: Can London Lead the Way? Industry leaders, policymakers and climate advocates came together to discuss how zero-emission freight can help achieve a net-zero carbon city by 2030. 🤔 It’s a big challenge: UK van emissions are up 63% since 1990, with 1M+ more diesel vans on UK roads than 10 years ago. Vans are now central London’s leading source of harmful NOx emissions. Meanwhile, cities like Amsterdam and Stockholm are already flexing bold zero-emission policies that will deliver results. Paris is on course too. 🙌 But, there’s hope: A Zero-Emission Zone for freight in central London could cut 285,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and save £140M in health and carbon costs by 2030. Electric vans will soon outcompete diesel, and cargo bikes - having increased by 63% across London last year - are transforming last-mile deliveries. Members of our panel stressed the need to ramp up charging infrastructure, extend incentives like the congestion charge exemption and commit to a central zero-emission freight zone by 2030. 📖 Explore our latest report for insights and policy recommendations to make zero-emission freight in London a reality: https://lnkd.in/eSkV8zyw A huge thank you to Seb Dance, Anna Krajinska T&E UK, Eva Neitzert Just Economics, Dominic Phinn Climate Group, Elizabeth Culwick and Oliver Lord for joining us on the day and providing your expert views.

Director at Clean Cities I Lecturer at UoW | Passionate about making cities better places to live.

🗼🇫🇷 Paris has just sent a powerful message to cities everywhere. Last Friday, the City Council approved a bold step: piloting a zero-emission delivery zone, which the Clean Cities team, along with Respire, have been advocating for. In this area, only electric vehicles and cargo bikes will be allowed to deliver goods - a big win for cleaner air and healthier streets 💪 🚛 Why this matters: delivery vehicles make up less than 20% of Paris traffic but are responsible for over 40% of NO₂ pollution, according to our recent @Clean Cities study. https://lnkd.in/eYrDcr64 💡 With this move, Paris joins 35 other European cities preparing zero-emission zones to tackle air pollution and curb greenhouse gas emissions. (More about this, here: https://lnkd.in/eD_tRVSE) 🌍 Cities worldwide are watching. Could this be the future of urban deliveries?
