🚚 Can London lead the way on zero-emission freight?
Last week, we hosted Pathways to Zero Emission Freight: Can London Lead the Way? Industry leaders, policymakers and climate advocates came together to discuss how zero-emission freight can help achieve a net-zero carbon city by 2030.
🤔 It’s a big challenge:
UK van emissions are up 63% since 1990, with 1M+ more diesel vans on UK roads than 10 years ago. Vans are now central London’s leading source of harmful NOx emissions. Meanwhile, cities like Amsterdam and Stockholm are already flexing bold zero-emission policies that will deliver results. Paris is on course too.
🙌 But, there’s hope:
A Zero-Emission Zone for freight in central London could cut 285,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and save £140M in health and carbon costs by 2030. Electric vans will soon outcompete diesel, and cargo bikes - having increased by 63% across London last year - are transforming last-mile deliveries.
Members of our panel stressed the need to ramp up charging infrastructure, extend incentives like the congestion charge exemption and commit to a central zero-emission freight zone by 2030.
