Why #connectivity matters to Europe’s tech sovereignty: in an article for POLITICO Europe today, our Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy Paolo Grassia calls for a stronger EU in the global telecom value-chain. "Connectivity is the backbone of Europe's digital economy, but without bold policy choices, increased investment, and a commitment to scale innovation, Europe’s digital future will be at risk", he states in the article. Quoting this year's #Stateofdigi report, Paolo highlights that our continent "has the expertise, technology, and ambition to lead the digital transformation, but excessive fragmentation and over-regulation are hindering progress". 👇

📲 A united Europe needs a #singlemarket, and #telecoms are its backbone. However, decades of policies have created diverse entry points, preventing the emergence of a true European operator. The telecom market remains highly fragmented, with 41 mobile operating groups serving over 500,000 customers—far more than the five in the USA and even fewer in Japan and South Korea. Despite the Telecom Single Market Regulation, the EU still consists of 27 distinct national electronic communications markets, limiting pan-European operators' scale and growth and ability to compete globally. No MNO operates at a truly European level, with the largest group holding only 13.9% of the market and the top four combined failing to reach 50%. This fragmentation continues to hinder investment, innovation, and competition on a global scale. Take a look at Connect Europe's #StateofDigi 2025 report: https://lnkd.in/ebYRqi-b #MWC2025

As the European Parliament ITRE Committee prepares its own-initiative report on 🇪🇺 tech sovereignty & digital infrastructure, we are sharing key recommendations to strengthen Europe’s digital future: https://bit.ly/4inkjmP 1⃣ Enable scale to improve innovation & investment, and achieve the #EUSingleMarket. 2⃣ Adopt a new policy approach for the telecom sector, driven by the upcoming #DigitalNetworks Act. 3⃣ Revise the radio #spectrum rules to ensure better legal certainty and boost infrastructure investment. 4⃣ Promote industry cooperation to develop European solutions in #cloud, #AI & #virtualisation technologies to reduce external dependency & boost our strategic autonomy. 5⃣ Introduce an EU preference clause in public procurement to support innovation “made in Europe”. 6⃣ Maintain #ConnectingEurope Digital's scheme funding for #5G, network innovation and submarine cables while improving its budget. 7⃣ Reform IPCEIs to cut bureaucracy & maximize their impact. 8⃣ Apply the 25% red tape reduction target to telecoms & all related EU rules.

Europe has led the early market in Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which are essential for the Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) business model. So far, European operators account for nearly half of related announcements worldwide. NaaS enables operators to provide network services from a single platform, with open #APIs boosting app development and accessibility across networks. Many of our members are driving these initiatives, supporting industry standards like #OpenGateway. This shift helps expand business models while reducing complexity for customers. Read more about it in our #StateofDigi 2025 Report 👉https://bit.ly/stofdigi025
