Meet Christina S. Haak, a dermatologist and self-proclaimed science enthusiast whose passion naturally led her to her field. 🔬 💁♀️ We spent some time discussing her long-standing fascination with the intersection of medicine and cosmetics. For Christina, skincare is all about using quality products to keep her skin looking healthy and fresh. She believes that her job is not just about aesthetics, but about teaching people to take care of their skin for life. 🗓️There’s so much more to learn from Christina! Meet Christela, a young woman who loves dancing and uses cosmetics to enhance her performances and feel confident 💃    We spent some time with her talking about how K-pop inspired her to start dancing and to use makeup as a form of self-expression, to boost her confidence during performances and beyond.    📆 Her story and many others are part of our #BeyondTheSurface Exhibition, which will take place from 13 to 16 January at the European Parliament in Brussels. Yesterday, Cosmetics Europe and the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) met to discuss how the EU regulates cosmetic ingredients and cosmetic product claims as well as the latest developments on allergen disclosure requirements in Europe. In addition, topics such as market access, the system for notifying new regulatory requirements and custom clearance processes in Egypt were also covered. This meeting was an opportunity to exchange ideas, explore opportunities and challenges for the European and Egyptian cosmetics industry and work towards convergence of regulatory practices between the Egypt and the EU. Thank you to the EDA and all participants for this enriching meeting.

Today marks our last quarterly meeting of the year with EFfCI - The European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients colleagues, which took place in the EFfCI offices in Milan, Italy. Thank you for the insightful discussions on the latest regulatory and policy developments in the cosmetics sector. Yesterday, Yu-Lun HUANG, Technical Regulatory & International Affairs Manager presented the #CommitforourPlanet initiative at the 2024 Beauty Economy and Sustainability Forum (BEST Forum) organised by the Cosmetics Advancement Committee of China Health Care Association (CACHCA) in Beijing, China. #CommitforOurPlanet is a cosmetics industry-wide initiative that encourages all industry actors in Europe, from SMEs to larger corporations, to take part in a joint effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve packaging solutions and act for nature. This policymakers’ dinner was organised by Cosmetics Europe in partnership with The Parliament Magazine. The event featured insightful discussions on the evolving landscape of EU’s regulations for cosmetics including, new chemicals safety assessments, the implementation challenges faced by the industry and opportunities laying ahead. A big thank you to MEPs Pietro Fiocchi, Magdalena Adamowicz, Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz and Marta Wcisło for also joining us last night. As the next 2024- 2029 EU institutional mandate starts, it is crucial to raise awareness on the significant socio-economic contribution of our sector among stakeholders and work together to continue to ensure a prosperous cosmetics industry in Europe. For the past 30 years, Cosmetics Europe has led the development of robust test methods to determine various sun protection measurements, including Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The Double Plate Method (DPM) is one of them. It is a fully vitro SPF test method and an alternative to the currently used in vivo International Standard. A key attribute of the DPM is that it can be used any time of the year. The current international standard method is based on testing the efficacy of a sun protection product on volunteers’ skin, which must not be tanned. This can be difficult to ensure in the summertime. The DMP uses polymer plates to test the sun protection product and therefore can be employed all year round.  

Following a final plenary vote, today, the European Parliament has approved the Commissioners that will work alongside Ursula von der Leyen throughout the 2024-2029 European Union’s institutional mandate. Cosmetics Europe welcomes the new College of Commissioners and looks forward to engaging on key issues for the cosmetics industry, including the Chemicals Industry Package, Clean Industrial Deal, Water Resilience Strategy, Circular Economy Act, and Single Market Strategy.
