"[We will need] a more intensive, smart, and effective use of the grids and energy infrastructure if we want to lower the fixed costs of our system" said Commission EVP Teresa Ribera today in the press conference presenting the Clean Industrial Deal. 💪 Happy to see that the text on the grids package includes a focus to boost innovation: "An efficient network system ensures that energy flows from where it is produced to where it is needed, ensuring that everyone benefits from energy at the best cost. The Commission will put forward a European Grid Package to, among others, simplify Trans-European Networks for Energy, ensure cross-border integrated planning and delivery of projects, especially on interconnectors, streamline permitting, enhance distribution grid planning, boost digitalisation and innovation as well as increase visibility and prioritisation of manufacturing supply needs, also building on actions from the Grid Action Plan." Also great that the EIB is putting significant funding towards grids manufacturing, and presumably will also include the manufacturing of new and innovative grid technologies: "The EIB will also introduce a ‘Grids manufacturing package’ for the European supply chain to provide counter-guarantees to manufacturers of grid components, with an indicative amount of at least EUR 1.5 billion." Through collaboration with grid operators, our members are boosting capacity, improving efficiency, and enabling greater renewable energy integration.    This week’s spotlight is Plexigrid ☀️ In 2022, in Falköping, Sweden, Plexigrid have started a collaboration to increase the speed of network connections to the grid. The project consisted in evaluating if better planning tools can help enable any of the connections of renewable energy production, to enable 20 MW of new PV production and 10 MW of ESS at MV which was previously prevented by subscriptions to the overhead grid. The software developed by Plexigrid allowed for a higher utilization rate of existing electricity distribution infrastructure. 💡 Grids on the agenda in Strasbourg last week! Last week, the CurrENT team was in Strasbourg to discuss the benefits of innovative grid technologies with MEP Michael Bloss, MEP Seán Kelly MEP, MEP Nicolás González Casares, MEP Dario Tamburrano, and other stakeholders. Layla Sawyer presented the key findings of the Prospects for Innovative Grid Technologies report (developed in collaboration with Breakthrough Energy and Compass Lexecon) highlighting the critical role of innovative grid technologies in achieving Europe’s competitiveness and decarbonisation targets. The discussions reinforced the urgency of accelerating the deployment of innovation in electricity grids to power Europe's clean energy future. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to engage with us - and a special thank you to Cleantech for Europe, Suzana Carp, Jules Besnainou, Marta Lovisolo and Alberto Toril Castro from Breakthrough Energy . CurrENT's Secretary General, Layla Sawyer, is attending Enlit Europe's #ImpactCircle in Bilbao. The participants in the Impact Circle collaborate with Enlit’s Content team to design a Programme that tackles the most pressing questions, explores critical trends, and delivers actionable insights. Speaking on attending the Impact Circle this year, Layla Sawyer said "It is exciting to take part in this year's impact circle, co-oporating with other industry leaders to build the agenda for the event taking place in November. With the Clean Industrial Deal due to be unveiled next week, it is important that the final agenda reflects the challenges and opportunities facing Europe's electricity grids in the coming years, where deploying innovative grid technologies will be crucial for achieving Europe's ambitious decarbonisation and electrification targets."

Through collaboration with grid operators, our members are boosting capacity, improving efficiency, and enabling greater renewable energy integration.  This week’s spotlight is MetOx International 🌟 According to results of a study carried about by the IEA, over 80 million kilometres of grid infrastructure will need to be added or refurbished worldwide by 2040. This case study highlights the potential of High-Capacity Superconductors to meet the demand for a major increase in grid capacity with less physical infrastructure thanks to the transmission properties of superconductors. Superconductors deliver high capacity with less infrastructure, especially High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) Cables that transmit 5-10 times more capacity than conventional cables. HTS Cables have zero resistance allowing delivery of high capacity at lower voltages, reducing right of way costs and eliminating substation voltage upgrades. The document highlights the pivotal role that innovative grid technologies can play in Europe’s energy transition at the distribution level. 🚆 Off to Strasbourg! ⚡ Today, Layla Sawyer and Tullia De Rossi are heading to Strasbourg on behalf of CurrENT Europe, the advocacy association representing innovative grid technology providers. As the European Parliament plenary takes place, the MEPs will discuss the Clean Industrial Deal and review the European Commission Work Programme, setting key priorities for the EU’s future. CurrENT will be engaging with the Members of the European Parliament to highlight the critical role of grid innovation in Europe’s clean energy transition. It will also present key findings from the Prospects for Innovative Grid Technologies report, developed in collaboration with Breakthrough Energy and Compass Lexecon.  An efficient and resilient grid is essential to making the EU’s competitiveness and decarbonisation goals a reality.
