We continued discussions on EU sustainability policies, offering attendees insight into policy development and updates on recent EU legislation. 💡 Key session highlights included: - The European Commission’s Role: Lieven Baert (Case Handler Officer, Antitrust: Financial services - DG for Competition) explained the EU law, procedure in case of infringements, the Commission’s right of initiative, and policy budgeting. - The Waste Framework Directive: Vincenzo Gente (Policy Officer, - Circular Economy - From Waste To Resources - DG for Environment) outlined the directive’s scope, timeline, and the establishment of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Textile producers will need to designate an authorized producer responsibility organization to manage collection and cover associated costs. - The Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD): Werner Bosmans (Policy Officer - Circular Economy, Sustainable Production And Consumption - DG for Environment) discussed the scope and implementation of the SUPD, detailing the EU’s ban on certain single-use plastics and requirements for reduced use, design adjustments, labeling, and producer waste management. - The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): Wojtek S. Session 6 Highlights: Circular Solutions in Medical Nonwovens Sector ♻️ 🌟Our experts explored sustainable shifts in the medical and hygiene industries in the session moderated by Marta Roche Díez: Danielle van Horzen (SABIC) highlighted the transition from linear to circular models, addressing challenges in recycling medical waste. She shared that a considerable amount of medical waste is non-contaminated, presenting new opportunities for advanced chemical recycling.
