Research Center for Publicness in Contemporary Communication

About us

At Engage, the Brussels-based research centre for information and communication sciences of the UCLouvain, we study how social actors engage with one-another and with society at large, focusing on media, communication, and discourse. From these interactions, public spheres emerge. Our research explores the attitudes and practices that constitute this “publicness”, examining participation, interaction, and debate via various media platforms. Our research is guided by four main axes : - Strategic communication of institutions in the public sphere: Engage studies how institutions use strategic communication to shape identities, influence audiences, and transform the public sphere, exploring the discursive processes driving contestation, normalization, politicization, persuasion, influence, and propaganda. - Political and institutional participation: Engage examines how citizens’ media practices support or hinder participation in democratic processes, particularly in policy-making. We study the impact of digital platforms on trust, legitimacy, and involvement at various levels of governance. - Debates and critiques in the public sphere: Engage investigates the role of public debate as both a constitutive and disruptive force in the public sphere, analyzing controversies and societal debates to understand and participate in the evolution of democratic dialogue and critique. - Media use and media literacy in democratic citizenship: Engage explores how everyday media practices shape citizens’ democratic experiences and sense of publicness, focusing on how media literacy contributes to active citizenship. Engage is also firmly embedded within the public sphere it seeks to understand, contributing critically to public discussions. Our researchers see their work as integral to sustaining and enriching the public debate. Ultimately, Engage’s mission is grounded in the ideal of a democratic public sphere, where dialogues, participation, and informed debate thrive.

  • Don't miss the next EDMO BELUX Lunch Lecture — Down with Neocolonialism!’ The resurgence of a strategic narrative in wartime Russia —with Dr. Maxime Audinet 🔔 Third EDMO BELUX 2.0 Lunch Lecture! 🍽️ 🗓️ Date: 16 December 2024 🕐 Time: 13:00-14:00 CET 🌐 Location: Online Event 👉 Register here! https://lnkd.in/dFYyaBA7 Join us for our webinar, where Dr. Maxime Audinet, PhD will present the results of his IRSEM Study on the new anticolonial narratives developed in Russian political discourses and spread in the informational ecosystem. The lecture will be hosted by Dr. Victor Wiard.  Maxime Audinet’s study investigates the narrative dimension of Russian foreign policy, focusing on the resurgence of the anti-(neo)colonial narrative since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It adopts the framework of "strategic narratives", which aim to shape international perceptions to influence actors. Unlike other approaches, this analysis starts from the narrative itself to trace its producers and disseminators. It examines the speeches of Russian political elites, diplomatic communication, and state media like RT and Sputnik, as well as their spread in sub-Saharan Africa through influence networks such as the "Prigozhin galaxy." #IRSEMStudy #anticolonial #politicaldiscourse #communication #EDMO #MediaResearch #Disinformation UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles

  • 📖 Poststructuralist discourse theory. New book chapter out ! Published by Jan Zienkowski (researcher at ReSIC, Université libre de Bruxelles, and associate researcher at Engage - UCLouvain), in the Handbook of Pragmatics (John Benjamins Publishing Company). This 📖 chapter presents articulation as the core concept of Essex-style discourse theory. It presents related concepts such as the field of discursivity, the nodal point, the empty signifier, logics of equivalence and difference, as well as a brief introduction the Lacanian approach to discourse and subjectivity. The chapter also discusses new tendencies in poststructuralist discourse theory. Special attention goes to the subfield of fantasy studies, to inquiries into the logics of populism, as well as to theoretical and empirical explorations of the discursive-material knot. The final section of this chapter provides a brief discussion of the way linguistic pragmatics and poststructuralist thought might be articulated together and enrich each other. This year’s theme is “Discourse and the imaginaries of past, present and future societies: media and representations of (inter)national (dis)orders.” 🔎 Are you working on the discursive construction of social and political imaginaries? DNC6 provides an interdisciplinary platform to explore how past, present and future societies are imagined and articulated through language, media, and representation in a world shaped by multiple crises. 🔬 We welcome contributions from scholars in all disciplines of discourse analysis, as well as researchers in the humanities and social sciences. Topics may concern the following non-exhaustive list of questions: - How imaginaries of past, present, and future societies are discursively constructed, and how do they evolve over time? - What are the building blocks of various ideological imaginaries (e.g. populism, neoliberalism, environmentalism) and how do these imaginaries inform social identities, subjectivities, and notions of citizenship across time? - What roles do different media forms and genres play in articulating and transforming societal discursive imaginaries? - How can one operationalize discourse analytical approaches, concepts, and methods to investigate cultural, social, political and/or environmental imaginaries? - … (you can find a list of other questions that may be addressed in the full CfP below 👇) 📆 Important Dates: - Submission Deadline: February 28th, 2025 - Notification of Acceptance: March 7th, 2025 - Registration Deadline: April 31st, 2025 (authors of papers need to be paying members of DiscourseNet) 🌍 Multilingual Policy: We welcome submissions in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. • 👏Congratulations to our team members on their successful presentation at the first-ever Doctoral Day organized by the IRIS-L Research Institute! It was inspiring to see our researchers share their work on interdisciplinary panels and engage in thought-provoking discussions on socially relevant topics. 🎓Our research center is proud to have had Lydie Denis and Kelly Celeste Vossen represent us at this Doctoral Day. As part of IRIS-L, our center values interdisciplinary collaboration, and it was inspiring to see Lydie present her work on the construction of continuity in decision-making discourse during the COVID-19 crisis, alongside Kelly’s analysis of the discursive construction of eco-citizenship in Belgium in activism and institutional participation. Their presentations truly reflect our commitment to engaging with complex societal issues.

👏 Last Thursday marked the first-ever Doctoral Day for the IRIS-L Research Institute, and what a rewarding experience it was! The event was filled with insightful presentations, engaging discussions, and a fantastic blend of both social and scientific exchanges among our diverse doctoral community at UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles. 🎓 Throughout the day, PhD candidates from across disciplines shared their research, bringing together multiple perspectives on shared issues and challenges. One standout panel focused on the political subjectivities of women, where I had the pleasure of attending presentations by Camille Rutsaert (historian), Marie Frédérick (philosopher), and Nathan Gaborit (sociologist), moderated by Nathalie Grandjean. 🤓 I was also thrilled to present in a panel on "discursive circulations" with my colleagues Lydie Denis and Lisa Verdebout. Together, we examined the social construction of meaning through various lenses: Lydie’s analysis on the "temporality" (specifically on continuity) of decision-making discourse during the COVID-19 crisis; Lisa’s study on the "transfer" of Italian literature into the francophone world, and my own work on the discursive construction of eco-citizenship in Belgium within activism and institutional participatory frameworks. The feedback and stimulating exchanges with colleagues from the IRIS-L Institute across disciplines enriched my own research tremendously. 🙏 A huge thank you to the organizing team for curating a day of intellectual stimulation, thought-provoking discussions on burning socio-political issues, and reflections on the role and commitment of researchers within the social world. We wrapped up the day with a convivial "Cheese and Wine" gathering, which was the perfect close to a truly memorable event. 🔍 IRIS-L is an interdisciplinary research institute in the humanities and social sciences, comprising twenty research centers and anchored on the UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles campus. The institute focuses on key issues in Brussels and Europe. Under the leadership of President Isabelle Ost, IRIS-L is shaping a community that bridges disciplines and fosters research on socially relevant topics. Exciting News! 🚀A few weeks ago, I have successfully passed my doctoral confirmation exam – a key milestone in the PhD journey. This assessment, typically undertaken midway through the process, ensures that the research progress made is substantial and on track for a successful thesis submission. 🤓In practice, the confirmation involves presenting your research to a committee of experts, known as the “guidance committee”. This group not only evaluates the work but also provides invaluable advice, supporting the candidate's theoretical and methodological development throughout the PhD journey. Prior to the exam, a written report is submitted by the PhD candidate, followed by an oral presentation and a (sometimes intense!) Q&A session with the committee. After deliberation, the committee renders their decision: a pass, a request for further work, or a fail. 🎓Think of it as the PhD equivalent of a master’s thesis defense, but reflecting 2 years of research and analysis! It’s a crucial step – like a vote of confidence – where the experts in your field assess your progress and (hopefully!) affirm their trust in your path toward completing your thesis. 🙏I'm deeply grateful for the support and expertise of my committee members: Andrea Catellani, Pieter Maeseele and Emeline De Bouver, as well as my supervisors Marie Dufrasne, and Thomas Jacobs whose guidance has been invaluable. 👏 A special congratulations as well to my fellow candidate at UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles,  Lydie Denis, who also successfully passed her confirmation exam recently. We have been each other's constant support through the highs and lows of PhD life in Information and Communication Science. Now, all that's left is writing the thesis! 😅 So, back to the grind – there's still plenty of work ahead, but I'm excited to dive deeper into my research and take this journey to the finish line! #PhD #Proud #UCLouvainSaintLouisBruxelles #Research #Brussels #EngageUCLouvain

  • Towards a New Paradigm on Post-truth Don't miss the next seminar session of Engage — Research Center for the Publicness of Contemporary Communication 🎓 With our guest Anam Kuraishi, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Antwerp 📆 WHEN : 20th of November 2024 🕔 17 pm 📍 WHERE : UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles Room P02 ➡️ Registration : https://lnkd.in/dzCwjguy 🚧 Access: Go through the parking entrance at 119, Rue du Marais. Enter the ‘Préfecture’ building, and Room P02 is on the groudfloor (on the left after the door) About the session : Post-truth is predominantly discussed with misinformation and fake news where truth has become secondary and has rendered it as an attack on the sanctity of politics and democracy. In her book ‘Towards a new paradigm on post-truth’, Anam Kuraishi challenges the common wisdom of ascribing post-truth with a negative connotation and associating it with the crisis of democracy. Instead, the book proposes that the concept of post-truth should be rethought as political discourse structured around the articulation of desire and outlines a framework for conducting empirical research on post-truth.
