Metals account for 10% of global material extraction, and will play a key role in the scale-up of energy transition infrastructure and the electrification of the transport and mobility system – critical mineral demand is expected to grow 4-6x by 2040. 🌎ICMM is proud to have contributed to World Economic Forum’s ‘Nature Positive: Role of the Mining and Metals Sector’ Report. Developed in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, the Report outlines the sector’s key impacts and dependencies on nature, and the priority actions corporate leaders can take to halt and reverse nature loss. By taking these five priority actions, the mining and metals sector could unlock more than $430 billion of additional value by 2030: 🌱 Transform operations across the mine life cycle by avoiding, then reducing, land pollution and emissions impacts, and restoring in line with the mitigation hierarchy. 💧 Improve water stewardship by avoiding then reducing, water abstraction, use and pollution in mining operations and landscapes. 🔄 Expand circularity and source responsibly by embracing standards and transparency, engaging with suppliers and customers. 🌳 Restore and regenerate landscapes by supporting nature conservation and restoration with local communities. 🤝 Transform policy systems and collaborate across sectors. 🇯🇵🇪🇺⛏️EU-Japan Critical Raw Materials Alliance (Nakasone Peace Institute and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung) Authors: Jan Cernicky, Tim Peter, Gunter Rieck Moncayo (KAS) Yosuke Ishigami, Hiroyasu Hosoi (NPI) Both #Japan and the #EuropeanUnion face critical import dependencies in the raw materials sector. Especially in the field of #rareearth elements (REE), the EU is largely exposed, while Japan has managed to reduce its vulnerability, although it remains at a critical level. With their combined market size and different politico-economic approaches, the EU and Japan could complement one other in their efforts to reduce this exposure. Therefore, this paper proposes large-scale cooperation between Japan and the EU to reduce the risk of REE supply. The prerequisite for this cooperation is that the EU establishes a Critical Raw Materials Agency, which could act as a counterpart to the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). Unlike JOGMEC, the European agency should not be involved in the operational extraction of raw materials, but should focus on the EU’s strengths, which are of a financial nature. The EU-Japan Critical Raw Materials Alliance should include: ➡️EU-Japan public-private funds: The EU and Japan should pool their financial firepower to support targeted diversification projects with purchase guarantees, contracts for difference, and concessionary loans. ➡️Joint procurement and #stockpiling: Japan and the EU could benefit from cooperation in procurement and stockpiling, thus further stabilising the supply of critical minerals and mutually supporting one other in the event of an emergency. For the EU’s multi-level system, this would require the transfer of necessary competencies to a prospective European Raw Materials Agency. ➡️Joint environmental and technological initiatives: To provide transparency on meeting ESG criteria, the Japanese and European governments should work together to include local stakeholders in the process and to provide an open framework of communication. In addition, joint innovation programmes should be launched to accelerate the development of recycling, separation, and refinement technology for REE. ➡️Critical Raw Materials Club: If the above-mentioned measures do not suffice in the event of intensified global trade conflicts, a Critical Raw Materials Club should be founded by Japan and the EU and ideally joined by as many members as possible of the OECD, ASEAN, etc. Trade barriers would be created vis-à-vis third countries to ensure a level playing field of REE, providing incentives for REE suppliers to extract and process rare earths within the club.

EU-based companies grew investment in research and development by 9.8% in 2023, surpassing growth in the US, China, and Japan!  That is just one of the insights from the 2024 Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard.   Published since 2004, the Scoreboard brings economic information from the latest financial accounts of the world's top 2000 R&D investors, and an extended sample of the top 800 companies based in the EU.       Here are more highlights:  ➡️ The EU accounts for 18.7% of global R&D investment, second only to the US.  ➡️ 11 EU companies are in the global top 50 R&D investors, with Europe leading in automotive innovation.  ➡️ EU leads R&D investments in automotive, and EU-based global players are making significant advancements in ICT and health.  While challenges remain, the EU’s robust innovation ecosystem provides a solid foundation for long-term competitiveness.
