Tyre Recycling in Europe
About us
The European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA) is an independent, member-driven European Association comprised of +250 recycling professionals involved in the diverse activities of the ‘tyre recycling industry’. ETRA members include both the public and private sectors involved in the environmentally sound disposition of post-consumer tyres. Membership is open to granulaters and other processors of post-consumer tyres, as well as users of the materials in an expanding number of products and applications. Tyre management bodies and collectors, research and training bodies, developers, manufacturers of recycling equipment, and other interested parties are also active members of the association. Our Vision ETRA focuses on material recycling as a means of contributing to sustainability of the circular economy by substituting RTMs for virgin resources while reducing production and use costs, and CO 2 impacts Several recent technological advancements rely on tyres as source to produce advanced material outputs ETRA remains a competitive force – helping to introduce advanced technologies, treatments, materials, products, applications and ideas to the market – as sustainable, cost-effective and performant alternatives to virgin resources. Mission ETRA is the only pan-European body that represents the independent tyre recycling sector in Europe. ETRA represents the industry in Brussels and is a key co-ordinator in a number of research Projects, assisting in joining partners, applying for funding and working to bring new solutions to old problems, bringing research and industry together to target high value solutions. ETRA is involved in developing a wider awareness of tyre recycling and the uses to which tyre derived materials can be put to. Driving the recycling process up the hierarchy towards higher value projects. Read more About Us. ETRA organises a number of events each year with the aim of developing awareness of the potential of tyre derived materials

Yesterday starts in Rome, our meeting on rubberised asphalts. We started with a visit to the plant that produces modified asphalth in San Cesareo. Rubberized asphalts are not only technically viable but also more sustainable. However, despite these advantages, the adoption and implementation of rubberized asphalts are not as widespread as they could be. There are countries who seems more ahead on this way. These success stories of innovations, entrepreneurship, policies and best practices, will illustrated in deep by who has been on the forefront. Infill materials for Artificial Turf – Many good reasons to keep using it On 26 September 2023 the EU Commission adopted the decision to ban the sale (not the use) of polymeric materials for infill, starting from 15 October 2031. This decision is creating concerns among end users about possible limitation of the use of artificial fields. However: · The use of recycled rubber infill materials in artificial turf is: · Legal, safe, environmental friendly, sustainable, in line with GPP and the Green Deal · More durable and better performing that any other infill · Cheaper than other materials contributing to make Artificial Turf affordable by small Sports Associations and Public Bodies. · Reusable, many times over for the same purpose · Social inclusive There are many good reasons to prefer recycled rubber infill and keep using it. Bruno Marabotto has worked since 1982 in the Sports Plant branch of the Torino Town Council, where he was responsible for the design and construction of sports fields. From 2001 to 2003 he took care of the maintenance of city stadium (delle alpi). In 2002 he developed a plan to transform 30 clay sports surfaces with artificial turf. He then transformed the Winter Olympic Stadium into a football stadium for the two local clubs: Turin and Juventus. The municipality has been Awarded as the European Capital of Sports for 2015. He is VP of ETRA. Discover more at the workshop “Recycled materials and Public works: How to reduce the gap?” focused on enhancing Public Authority engagement in best practices and Green Procurement.
