Towards a Water Resilient Europe: Upholding the Human Right to Water Safe and secure water supplies are of critical importance for all people everywhere, to protect public health, mainstream resilience, and guarantee safety and the well-being of people and societies. The promised European Water Resilience Strategy should set a clear direction for coordinated and coherent action by Member States, taking into account national and regional circumstances. It's #WorldToiletDay - and another chance to share this piece we wrote in 2017. https://lnkd.in/ei4VygGB Access to sanitation is essential for everyone across the world; affording people dignity, health, hygiene, an education, personal safety to name but a few. According to the WHO, 1.5 billion people still do not have basic sanitation services, such as private toilets or latrines. Of these, 419 million still defecate in the open, for example in street gutters, behind bushes or into open bodies of water. So, wherever you are reading this, sanitation is something that each of us has to take seriously and commit to delivering every day to every one.

No #WaterResilience without clean water! Together with NGOs, the water sector is urging the European Parliament to stop delaying negotiations on quality standards for lakes, rivers, coastal waters and groundwater. We need clear rules in place in time for the next River Basin Management Plans. A huge 'thank you' to our members and colleagues for their tireless work on the #UWWTD over the last two years. This new iteration supports both consumer interests and environmental sustainability by enacting critical regulations to safeguard water quality across Europe. #WaterMatters You can read our reaction here: https://lnkd.in/eCm73WYw
Congratulation to my colleagues at EU Environment and Climate for the adoption of the #UrbanWastewaterTreatmentDirective. It is an example on how innovation results paved the way for improving legislation with the introduction of new requirements for nutrient recovery, removal of emerging contaminants and improving the management of run-off. Innovation projects funded under #FP7 and #Horizon2020 allowed to show that these improvements are feasible and technology is ready. Let's move towards #zeropollution and with the involvement of the water sector, wastewater management will become more and more sustainable.
