Recycling: Bridging circular economy & climate policy
About us
EuRIC - The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation is the umbrella organisation for recycling industries. Through its Member Federations from 23 EU & EFTA countries, EuRIC represents across Europe over: • 5,500+ companies generating an aggregated annual turnover of about 95 billion €, including large companies and SMEs, involved in the recycling and trade of various resource streams; • 300,000 local jobs which cannot be outsourced to third EU countries; • An average of 150 millions of tons of waste recycled per year (metals, paper, glass, plastics and beyond); Recyclers play a key role in a circular economy. By turning waste into resources, recycling is the link which reintroduces recycled materials into the value chains again and again. On Monday, ENVI lawmakers rubber-stamped the preliminary agreement on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR), marking a major step toward achieving true circularity—a development wholeheartedly welcomed by EuRIC♻️📦 The PPWR corrigendum text has also officially received the European Parliament’s endorsement and will now be transmitted to the Council of the EU for final ratification at the ministerial level, followed by its publication in the EU Official Journal. 📂This regulation provides the clarity and stability businesses need to plan and invest in circular packaging value chains. Delaying its adoption would only create uncertainty and slow progress on the environmental goals we all strive to achieve. 💪The EU recycling industry is ready to move forward and meet the new requirements. What’s needed now is quick action to implement the secondary legislation, harmonise standards, and issue the necessary guidance! EuRIC remains committed to working closely with policymakers to ensure an effective implementation. 📸 Studio Empreinte/Getty Images

The Joint Research Center has published its long-awaited technical proposals for EU-wide end-of-waste criteria for plastics. It is now time for the European Commission to accelerate the adoption of harmonised EoW criteria for #plastics to create a strong single market for recycled materials♻️ 👉The absence of a consistent legal framework on end-of-waste for certain waste streams creates uncertainty for waste operators and for entities trading and using secondary raw materials. 👉The implementation of EU-wide end-of-waste criteria can address these disparities between Member States and across different actors in the value chain, ultimately increasing the uptake of high quality secondary raw materials in manufacturing processes. 🔗You can download the report here: https://lnkd.in/e4VBMBTD #plastics #recycling #circulareconomy #market #demand #trade #EuRICplastics #EPRB #RecyclingEurope

Eurostat has published its 2023 data on the circular material use rate (#CMUR), revealing that 11.8% of materials used in the EU came from recycling—the highest share recorded to date💪♻️ This represents a 0.3% point increase from 2022. The Netherlands (30.6%), Italy (20.8%), and Malta (19.8%) achieved the highest #circularity rates, while Romania (1.3%), Ireland (2.3%), and Finland (2.4%) had the lowest. Metal ores had the highest circularity rate at 24.7%. 🎯The EU aims to double this rate by 2030 under its Circular Economy Action Plan.

At today's conference on "Extended Producer Responsibility for Textiles - Developments in Europe and Germany," EuRIC's Secretary General Julia Ettinger (Blees) highlighted the importance of effective #EPR schemes to reduce administrative burdens while supporting a more sustainable textile sector. 🧵She also stressed the need to avoid a fee on second-hand textiles. The conference, organised by EuRIC member Gemeinschaft für textile Zukunft (GftZ) and held in Berlin, also addressed the ongoing targeted revision of the Waste Framework Directive (#WFD) and the Ecodesign regulation (#ESPR), both of which are crucial for shaping the future of textile recycling in Europe. A heartfelt thank you to the organisers for providing the opportunity to discuss the pressing issues surrounding circularity in textiles and the crisis currently facing Europe's textile sorting and recycling sector🙏
