⚡In July 2024, the Port of Barcelona took a major step toward maritime #electrification with the launch of its first Onshore Power Supply (#OPS) system for cargo ships. This giant electrical outlet enables ships to connect to the grid while docked, significantly cutting emissions, reducing air pollution and noise, and lowering CO₂ impact. This is the first OPS for a container terminal in a Mediterranean port, a milestone for sustainable shipping. Its installation is part of the #Nexigen project, whose deployment is meant to make the Port of Barcelona a CO2 neutral facility by 2050 and to achieve a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030🌱 Setting up this OPS system required extensive #electrical expertise and the work of qualified electrical professionals. Our member from Catalonia FEGiCAT - FEDERACIÓ DE GREMIS D'INSTAL·LADORS DE CATALUNYA is working with the Government of Catalonia to address the #shortage of skilled workers. The local industry and the #electrification of the port of Barcelona are a great opportunity to promote Catalan companies and involve them in a fair and local #energy transition. [PRESS RELEASE] #CleanIndustrialDeal: a positive step towards electrification, but who will implement it? Brussels, 26 February 2025 – EuropeOn - The European Electrical Contractors Association welcomes the Clean Industrial Deal’s commitment to #electrification with a 32% electrification KPI by 2030 and to #skills development. However, the plan overlooks workforce shortages, failing to ensure that Europe has enough qualified professionals to install and integrate #cleantech necessary for the electrification, #decarbonisation and #competitiveness of industries and companies in Europe. Key takeaways:  🟢 Including a clear 32% electrification KPI by 2030 (against 21.3% currently) is a strong move in the right direction. Along with the proposed actions on #grids, taxation and #affordability, this KPI provides companies with more confidence to invest in their assets and workforce. 🟠 While the Clean Industrial Deal soundly recognises the need to address skills shortages by including a dedicated pillar, it fails to identify the root problem: #workforce shortages. As explained in EuropeOn’s Manifesto(1), without enough workers, #upskilling and #reskilling efforts won’t be enough to implement the provisions included in the Clean Industrial Deal. 📢 Countdown to the Clean Industrial Deal ❗ As we look forward to the release of the Clean Industrial Deal #CID in a few days, it is crucial to highlight the importance of addressing #workforce and skills shortages to boost the competitiveness of European companies. 💡Establishing an observatory to gather data on the workforce dimension of the CID and provide #skills intelligence could be a step in the right direction. However, for it to be truly effective, it will need to consider the following points: 👷♀️Assessing workforce needs first: before addressing skills gaps, we must determine how many workers are actually needed. 🌱Ensuring integration with the #NetZero Europe Platform: building on its mission to monitor and forecast workforce demand and supply will be key. 📑Aligning with existing EU reporting frameworks: measures under the #CID should leverage insights from existing initiatives like the Energy Efficiency Directive's workforce provisions #EED. ➡️ After an exciting day with our members FEGiCAT - FEDERACIÓ DE GREMIS D'INSTAL·LADORS DE CATALUNYA, our Secretary General, Julie Beaufils, attended the #SolarQualitySummit to speak on the panel “Strengthening #Skills for Excellence in the #PV Sector”. She highlighted the urgency of addressing the skills shortage through strong technical education (#VET) and specialised training: 🗣️ “We need to provide jobs that are attractive and that ensure quality installations. Strong initial education must be paired with specialised courses.” As seen in the two training schools in Catalonia (Aemifesa - Aemifesa Formació, Egibcn Escola Gremial d'Electricitat i Fontaneria De Barcelona), students need a solid initial education and practical experience on the latest technologies in the market🌞 💡The discussion on skills will also need to include a debate on labour migration and on productivity, including designing #PV products that are faster and easier to install. 📢 Countdown to the Clean Industrial Deal ❗ A few weeks ago, EuropeOn - The European Electrical Contractors Association sent a letter to EVP Teresa Ribera, EVP Stéphane Séjourné, and Commissioners Wopke Hoekstra and Dan Jørgensen, on the #skills pillar of the Clean Industrial Deal #CID, outlining key recommendations to tackle workforce and skills shortages. 📑With the European Commission set to release this document in less than a week, we want to stress a crucial point: before focusing on upskilling and reskilling, we must first tackle #workforce shortages. As we emphasised in our letter, “the primary challenge is to attract more people into technical education and careers.” ⚡The #decarbonisation and #competitiveness of European industries need to rely first of all on a workforce that is sufficient in numbers, but also equipped with the right skills to deploy clean technologies efficiently. ➡️This week, our Secretary General, Julie Beaufils, visited Barcelona to meet our Catalonian members and speak at #SolarQualityEU On Tuesday, she met with our colleagues from FEGiCAT - FEDERACIÓ DE GREMIS D'INSTAL·LADORS DE CATALUNYA and visited two training schools set up by local installer associations: Aemifesa - Aemifesa Formació and Egibcn Escola Gremial d'Electricitat i Fontaneria De Barcelona. These schools #skill and upskill students, giving them the opportunity to practice with the latest technologies. They even have a solar #PV classroom with an amazing view!🌞 👷♂️This visit was also an opportunity to discuss a major challenge for electrical contractors in Catalonia: 85% of installer companies have fewer than 5 employees. This allows them to provide hyper-local services, but also makes it harder to take on apprentices and attract new talent.
