Passing of Hvladimir, the Beluga Whale Our community is deeply saddened by the passing of Hvladimir, the beluga whale who touched the hearts of so many. As the European Association for Aquatic Mammals (EAAM), we regret that this tragic outcome could not be prevented, and we believe it underscores the need for a more compassionate approach to the care of marine mammals. Hvladimir’s behavior strongly suggested that he had previously lived in human care, as seen in his repeated attempts to interact with people. Animals like Hvladimir, who have formed deep connections with humans, often face significant challenges when returned to the wild, especially when found outside their natural environment. In such cases, a controlled setting can offer the safety and stability needed to ensure their well-being and minimize the risks they face. There were numerous occasions when Hvladimir sought out human contact, even after suffering harm. It is likely that his well-being had been compromised for some time. While we are aware that relocating him to Arctic waters was considered, we believe this outcome serves as a powerful reminder of the complexities involved in such decisions. The option of moving him to a modern, accredited zoological facility—where he could have received expert care and social interaction with other belugas—was not pursued, and this is a cause for deep reflection. Belugas are highly social animals, and Hvladimir’s integration with con-specifics could have significantly improved his quality of life. Furthermore, such a relocation would have provided valuable opportunities for scientific research, contributing to our understanding of beluga biology and conservation at a time when their populations are increasingly threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and other human activities. We believe that this unfortunate outcome should guide future efforts to protect marine mammals in similar situations. The EAAM remains fully committed to advocating for the safety and well-being of all marine mammals, and we stand ready to support decisions that prioritize their welfare above all else. Sincerely, European Association for Aquatic Mammals (EAAM)

📣 Our marine mammal experts community takes great pride in the incredible rescue operation led by one of our members, Oceanogràfic València, in collaboration with our colleagues and friends from the Georgia Aquarium. Two beluga whales residing at the Nemo Zoological Facility in Kharkiv found themselves in a precarious situation due to the conflict in Ukraine. Drawing upon their expertise and experience, a team of experts from our marine mammal community (including veterinarians, trainers, technicians, and logisticians) achieved the remarkable feat of safely relocating these two animals to Valencia, Spain. This unprecedented operation is a shining example of the high level of knowledge and dedication present in accredited zoological institutions committed to aquatic mammal welfare. 👍 We have a brotherly thought for Daniel, member of our well-being committee, and Robert, our president-elect and all the others involved in this remarkable rescue operation.
🌊 The European Association for Aquatic Mammals spoke this week in Brussel with MEPs Max Orville and the remarkable navigator and ocean defender Catherine Chabaud ! Together, we focused on the vital contributions of science, education, and conservation to protect our precious aquatic mammals. 🐬 Bycatch, collisions, and the alarming decrease in certain cetacean populations demand urgent action. Our experts are at the forefront, devising innovative solutions and raising awareness to safeguard these majestic creatures and their habitats. 💡 Through collaboration and dedication, we're paving the way for a brighter future for aquatic mammals. Let's continue to work together to ensure their survival and thriving existence in our oceans! #AquaticMammalsProtection #ScienceEducationConservation #SaveOurOceans #EAAM

The EAAM is excited to welcome Dr. Dudzinski from the @dolphincommunicationproject to present at the 2024 annual symposium in Loro Parque Tenerife! "DCP’s research shows that dolphin offspring are enriching to the whole social group, not just to their moms or kin. In the first photo, Sandy, a few months old female, is sandwiched between her mom, Tilly and her aunt, Maury, as they approach the researcher. Through DCP's long-term observational studies of dolphin society, our research confirms calves learn early from mom about social life, including pectoral fin contact, as well as how to socialize with other kin and group members." The EAAM looks forward to welcoming both Dr. Dudzinski and Dr. Hill to the 2024 Symposium where Dr. Hill will be presenting on creativity in cetaceans! "Understanding dolphin creativity offers a window into their minds to understand their cognitive flexibility. Here, scientists from DCP, StMU, and SHU join Teri from RIMS to see just how creative Lenca will be! Our creativity studies focus on large and small dolphins - the DCP team has queried both bottlenose dolphins and killer whales to see how creative they can be. We’ve learned - VERY!"
